Barry Cryer

As a fan of old British Comedy I'm aware Barry used to write for a lot of the greats including Les Dawson. My Mum and I used to chuckle when watching any comedy clip shows or tributes to old comedians because you could guarantee Barry Crier would be a contributor.

My first memories of Barry Cryer

]
That took me back and had to delve deeper into Joker’s Wild. The first series in the b & w days in 1969 had Ted Ray as captain and Barry had an assistant. She was dropped from Series 2. You will see why as her role would contravene every standard of broadcasting these days. Barry has a fag on the go throughout.

No more Hamish and Dougal ... Sad day.
1969 jokers wild, remember watching it., Ohh for those woke free days,

What is impressive is the range of acts he worked with and wrote for.

Throughout he was working with cutting edge acts new acts like Spike, the Pythons and Kenny Everett, satirical shows like The Frost Report, for traditional mainstream UK comics like Morecambe & Wise, the Two Ronnies, Bob Monkhouse and Tommy Cooper, international stand up superstars like Bob Hope, Jack Benny and George Burns and nearly all the current 'alternative' comedians are full of praise for help he gave them. It only seems like a year ago he was on Count Arthur Strong.

Quite remarkable.

I just heard Giles Brandreth talking about him. He said, knowing he was ill, he promised to visit him. Barry said "Don't bring me any green bananas." Total comedy genius.
