Best national anthems

I do like The Star Spangled Banner. The US does all that patriotism stuff rather well.

I always wanted to be an American when I was a kid. I love the place.

I'd love for it to be England's national anthem, we need a separate English anthem and we have for a long time.

Would quite like the UK to have a new one too, but there are far fewer options.
It is a real anti monarchist poem that the lyrics are from. Always surprised that it gets used at so many establishment settings. It is very religious though so maybe they forgive it for that, even if many Christians think it is blasphemous. The tune is inspiring though but was written well after Blake's death

Not really seeing any anti-monarchist themes in the poem.

Anti-industrialisation, and maybe anti-church.

I think the anti-industrialisation message is even more relevant now with the issues facing the world.

I know Blake had views that could be conceived as anti-monarchy, I just don't think they're in that poem.

But I don't think any anthem should involve the monarchy either way, it should be an anthem for England, not the Royal Family.

Likewise for the UK.

He was a big supporter of the French Reolutionaries and the last verse is probably about the working mans fight against his oppressors,

I say probably because nobody really knows, but as Blake himself was very anti monarchy, this is the meaning a lot of people have put on it.

He was a big supporter of religion though and the blasphemy bit was not his intention but it was not a literal bible translation - hence why some church groups think it blasphemous.

All of the opposing nations in the 6 nations are crackers and generally sang with much more passion to be fair.
I too would love to see a change to the English National Anthem when we are competing as england rather than GB.

I would probably rank:

Scotland
Ireland
Wales
Italy
France

But even the French is better than the drone of God Save the King

Also, why do National Anthems always sound better at the rugby than the football? Is it because the crowd are more respectful? Is it because they get better performers? Is it because they are sang more passionately by the players? There's something different about a 6 Nations anthem.

Italy is the best. Closely followed by the USA and France.

Ours is dreary at best. Especially when all of our players sing the wrong words, as they did yesterday.

Mexican player with tears streaming down his face whilst they sing their anthem.

Can't fault the passion.

Le Marseillaise was immortalised in Escape to Victory.

I posted about the 2002 Brazil documentary last night, everyone ignored it even though Juninho is in it loads, but in it it says that Brazil lost the 1998 final during Le Marseillaise.

Controversial but I actually think the USA one is decent.
