It’s really annoying - I just saw taht ad with Roy Keane , Jeff Stelling etc peddling Paddy Power. I had a quick look and Roy Keane is allegedly worth 44 million - does he really need additional money whilst contributing to others misery?

It is time betting was banned from being able to advertise on the tele.

This link makes interesting reading regarding betting companies furlough claims even though they made huge profits.

Betting advertising has just replaced that of cigarettes. It's about time rules on betting advertising were made stricter. I'm not sure the "bet responsibly" or whatever other token caution really makes a difference. I've said a few times on here that I'm lucky to have zero interest in gambling, but I know of people who have been consumed by it to the extent their life has been ruined.

The simple truth is, gambling will cost most people money. For that reason alone it shouldn't really be allowed on TV. If you add in to that mix that a fair proportion of folk will gamble with money they don't have them it's a recipe for disaster.

When I was growing up you had to walk to a bookies and place your bet, then walk back to pick up your winnings. It limited the average person's loses. Probably why lots of bookies are next door to pubs.

Today you can wake up financially comfortable and 2 hours later lost the house.

I don't know if you can entirely blame this on advertising, it's a result of the tech available today.

Technology is the conduit but is the advertising that is the problem.

Bookies next to/near to pubs is definitely deliberate. I don’t if it’s the bookies or the pub doing it but some even have betting slips on the table in the pub so you can fill it in and take next door.

Possibly, but if you consider watching football on TV in the 80s. Even if Ray Winstone was telling us to man up at half time, there was no way to get a bet on.

Technology has definately driven the proliferation of gambling.

In the 60/70's, newly built working men's clubs use to have bookies as part of the build.

I agree with what you are saying, it is much easier to put a bet on than two decades back but flooding the tele/internet with adverts doesn't help.

Ads don't help and probably shouldn't be allowed anywhere. As addictions go, it's as bad as any other in terms of ruining lives.

It certainly is mate but it isn't something new. My mum worked for Reggie Boyle's in the 70's and she use to regale some horror stories of men opening their wage packets and losing the lot.

I use to have a bet in the 80's, nothing big but use to like to have a Yankee every weekend and use to follow certain horses - Cathy's Lad (my mums name) being one of them.

That horse bought my first bed. :ROFLMAO:

Edit: I maybe need to add for my own house there - it wasn't the first bed I had ever had. :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

I have backed Cathy's lad a few times over the years. My 2 favourite racehorses to back when they ran against each other was vodkatini and Mrs muck. If Mrs muck bothered to start in line, she won, if she gave vodkatini 30 lengths start at the beginning of the race she lost. I would have 2 slips written out and depending on the first 5 seconds of the race I would run up and back one out the other.

I also remember the audio only service, called something like excel.

The heady days of the lucky 15.

The only horse I have backed in years is lady Ayresome. I am just not very good with the horses.

The advertising of all betting, including National Lottery, all alcohol and all tobacco products should be banned from television and radio, if people want to bet, drink or smoke that is there business but promoting things that are proven to be damaging should not be allowed, I guess with betting the massive tie in with sponsorship is problematic and seems increasingly prevalent within televised horse racing for example, it should be allowed within the context of a race name but no actual adverts.

Mrs Muck was another, a mate of mine was nicknamed Muck.

Like you, I had a bet on Lady Ayersome but more out of interest than anything else. I don't back the horses or football but will have a go on the Lottery (divvies tax).

I also like a small bet on the Master's golf for added interest.

Am, gambling raises only 3 billion a year in taxes, so its not even that much. Alcohol I think is 12 billion. The government haven't banned gambling adverts for reasons other than taxation. Probably more to do with tory party sponsorship than tax revenue.

Overall you are right, if its bad for you and addictive, it shouldn't be advertised. I would include fast food and fizzy drinks in that.

Fast food and fizzy drinks isn't a bad shout. (y)

To sensible adults those things do no real harm. The problem is, they set a lifestyle for kids that will last in to adulthood. That's why as a nation we are getting fatter and fatter and why I think the ads should be banned.
