Bill Gates has acquired 242,000 acres of US farmland but it is unclear what he has bought it for

A quick Google comes up with the top 50 private landowners in the USA with 10x that property. Not all are just farmland but most are majority farmland.

I'm not so sure that she does - the homes and land that she personally owns are Balmoral (50,000 acres) and Sandringham (20,000 acres).

i'm sure she has a few more hectares here and there, but falls well short of 250,000.

Well that is the old chestnut of Liz's personal property v the Crown Estate.
My understanding is the Crown Estate is the monarch's but they can't sell it, it has to go on to the next one. Whereas her personal property can be traded.

I mean it's not as if Musk is using his wealth to fund access to the internet for everybody on the planet no matter how remote their homes may be.
Or doing more for the space race in 10 years than NASA have managed in the last 50. With plans to future proof the existence of the human race by leading the race to a manned mission to Mars.
Or starting the race proper for sustainable transport solutions with Tesla cars and also exploring different modes of transport (Hyperloop).
