I genuinely had the best bolognese I ever had in Bologna. It was a place recommended by the guy on reception at the hotel. One of those places, you walk through a street-level door and descend into an area filled with laughter and clinking cutlery. My (business) partner was asked if he’d like to see the wine list, and he just looked at a lady sat across from us, who was pouring a small earthenware jug of wine into her glass, and smiling when she tasted it. It was the house red, cost €1 a litre and was fantastic. The good folk on here are normally better than any google search...
Any recommendations on touristy stuff, restaurants, bars et al gratefully received

The food was amazing. The madre of the family restaurant told me the bolognese sauce takes about 8 hours to cook in a huge vat. She wouldn’t tell me the recipe.
We ate, drank and laughed for hours, and I don’t think the bill was more than €30 all-in.
Can’t remember the name of the place, sorry Can’t even remember the hotel, although I think it was a mercure.
In summary, I go to the mercure on the off chance that is where you stayed
I then ask all the guys on reception if they remember you.....
What could possibly go wrong

And that, kind sirHaha, sorry.
I’ve actually just googled it, and it was the Mercury Centro. If you walk past the hotel on your right on this photo, turn right at the end of the building, the restaurant is on that road about 100 yards on the right hand side.
your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to find that restaurant, eat the same food, kiss the nonna from the kitchen and report back here.
And Maserati…Went and did a tour of the Ducati facroy - brilliant. You can also visit Ferrari and Lamborghini factories. I only went to Ducati because (get me) I was invited, great to see exotic bikes being hand built.

Modena is nice too, less touristy
Great write-up @1finny. I'll be in Bologna for 4 nights in July, predominantly to see Depeche Mode at the Stadio Dall'Ara, but I'll be following your recommendations
