Boro defenders

mogga was outstanding in his boro days, as a leader and defender, but in my opinion Southgate is the best centre half I’ve seen play for boro ?
 
I can only comment on players I have seen, and Southgate was the best - and we have had some great defenders but it's not even close.

His best days were at Boro. Just because he was one of Boro’s best defenders ever doesn’t mean he was as good as Ferdinand and Campbell - he wasn’t. But he was still one of the best centre halves in the country for a while.

Only Man Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea weee a bigger draw than us in the summer of 2001 when he signed and none of them needed a centre back.

Man Utd had Jaap Stan, Ronnie Johnson and Laurent Blanc with Wes brown and John o Shea breaking through so didn’t need him.

Arsenal had campbell and Keown, Adams was still around and had a young Matthew upson coming through.

Liverpool had Hyypia, Henchoz and Babbell

Chelsea had Terry, Gallas, Desailly

Absolutely he wasnt the finished article at boro but was still very very good and i think he made Mowbray look far better than he was. As an out and out defender ugo at his best was my favourite just loved the way he threw everything on the line to come out on top
