Boro fans in Newcastle area

I once went to the Boro mid week game in 1983 it was a vital home game against Crystal Palace, we were in the releagation zone to drop to thte old division 3 and Malcolm Allison was manager. I was living in Whitley Bay and did not drive at the time. My route was either Metro to Newcastle Central Station then United Service bus or train along the Durham coast vis Sunderland and Harlepool. It was OK for saturdays but took a long time. Any way this midweek game we won 2-0 and drew 0-0 at Chelsea on the Saturday to stay up good news, but the trip back I got to Newcastle, then got on the Metro, but it didin't go to Whitley Bay because ity was so late, So I walked from Shiremoor to Whitley Bay - I think it took 2 hours and I had to guess the route. Luckily I had booked the next day off work as it must have been 2.30am when I got in. In those days I never saw one Boro fan North of Sedgefield, no Internet. I could just get BBC Radio Cleleveland. It was like living another planet and I was 40 miles from Teesside.
 
Mobile phones only came avaialble for young people about 1995 and not sure if I had enough for a taxi.

Shiremoor Metro Station from what I remember was in the middle of no where.

I walked along the main roads and followed the road signs, luckily is was late April and dry and there was little traffic. An adventure but definitly an one off to follow the Boro. Getting a car made a big difference in those days. Driving Lessons were £7 to £8 then and I had £48 per week to live on and live independently so very limited income. It was possible to get to the Boro then for £3 from Whitley Bay on public transport (United Bus day Rover ticket and 2 Metro fees).

Live in birtley now. Used to get the train on Saturdays but too unreliable so get the bus now. Drive or stay with family for weekday matches.
 
Anyone know of any pubs (either towards town or by the coast) that Boro fans will watch televised games in? Would be nice to watch a game and not have to go with my mates and inevitably hear about how 'wor Eddie's mags' are the greatest team on the planet.

I've had a few instances on Gosforth high street whereby they won't put our game on in the pub because a non-event Premier League game (Palace v Wolves one Super Sunday comes to mind) has been taking place.
 
Cullercoats. I'm not a ST holder, only usually do 2 - 3 matches a season. Almost always drive, it's only 45 mins down the A19.
 
Used to live in Cullercoats- got the metro & bus from the hay market . Night matches were a chew . Son is now a student at the uni, has the same probs getting back after night matches , although he lives more centrally than I did.

I remember after the Chelsea cup first leg a combination of being unable to get out of Doggy market carpark and A19 road closures sending me through the old pit villages, I didn't get home until well after midnight.

Definitely not worth it for a run of the mill midweek Championship fixture.
 
My lad lives in North Sheilds, and he goes on the train to most Saturday games with about 8 other Tyneside based lads from Teesside and East Cleveland. They are all going to Rangers and Millwall away together on the train, so there's quite a community of fellow Smoggies living behind enemy lines.
