Boro managers DO NOT chuck the cups away

I only listened on the radio, but I don't mind last nights result, in the grand scheme of things it will help. As much as I enjoyed last years cup run, it certainly cost us in the league, it can't not do when we already have to play 46 games and we didn't have much depth in high intensity positions.

Different this year too, as we have even less depth at the minute, but probably a stronger first 11, and will end up with an even stronger one.

I don't count it as a loss for the first team either, basically as next to none of them played. The ones who did play sounded poor, so it may end up as a kick up the **** for them.

Good run out for the kids, and some others and just shows have far most of them still have to go, and which may mute some of the calls for the kids and others to be getting game time. I often read this, based on people seeing clips from the youth teams/ under 23's etc, which is a million miles from a team trying to get out of the Championship, League 1 is miles behind that also.

Move on, there's a game 1000 times more important on Sunday, then a 2 day break, then another game 1000 times more important, then a two day break, then another game 1000 times more important etc.

The only time we should be bothering with the cups is when we're in a safe position in the prem, where the games carry little risk, and we may actually be able to win them.

Is that what I said ???

No

What I actually said was I agreed with wilder leaving out key players ( as sheff u eill sldo be doing tonight as well as did all the other champ clubs no Gyokeres for cov for example). Viv then said so what if they get injured playing shef u.

I replied if they get injured in a league game that’s too bad but it’s the league and you have to accept the risk rnd one of the cup isn’t in my opinion an acceptable risk.
I replied to what you said. You said it’s fine that players get injured in the league because there is a “reason”.

So if a player is injured in the Cup there is no “reason” for it.

I think the cups matter.

They do but not first rounds.

Wilder was spot on for me other disagree but that’s football.

I don't think anyone is pleased to be out are they?

The disagreement is around whether Wilder was right to rest players.

Happy to be corrected but don't think I've seen anyone have a pop at fans for being disappointed we're out.

Some seem to think we should have played our full strength team, others think Wilder was right not to. That's the disagreement isn't it?

We should have won the game either way.
Im not gonna trawl back through the thread and look for specific examples but I thought someone said it was the best result for us and I thought I’d seen the term “bed wetters” used but I might be wrong.

I also don’t think anyone would say we had to play our entire first team. Just that more of the first team should have been in and around the first 11.

I just find it odd that we don’t show more respect the cup as they are great to be involved in for the fans.

14 Championship teams out. We are not alone in chucking the cup away. That said a nice away trip to Leeds would have been nice.

That's even more reason to go for it. Yes now we know it'd have been Leeds next round but with other champo sides phoning it in there's a reasonable chance of a club like us sneaking through quite a few rounds before we even have to pull off a giant killing.

15 after tonight.

Watford and Burnley don't enter till the next round either.

So 15 of the 22 eligible Championship clubs were knocked out in this round.
4 of the surviving ones played another Championship club.

The league games really aren't more important. It's about fun. There's not much fun being humped in the premier League. If you really want to go up, newsflash, there's a bunch of teams sitting on 40 million 30 million. They'll take the top 4 or 5. We're playing for maybe the last place, but that's a long shot. There's shitloads of games in the season just take them as they come. If we were to snatch a place great. Maybes well avoid spending our parachute payments on complete dross this time and get to yo yo up and down the league's perpetually. That sounds fun.

Havent birmingham and wigan been one of the championship teams that were one of the european qualifiers via the cups?

EDIT both entered at the 3rd round stage so that must have played havoc with the current system

Two wins on the bounce and all this will disappear. We were a cup side when we were 7-16th premier league.

Our fans are fickle as anything. Honestly we are as bad as the Geordies. Let’s see how it all looks on Sept 1st.
I agree with most of your point, but I'm far more interested in how it looks when the World Cup puts the kibosh on the league for a bit. Our position on Sept 1st is very likely to be below where we'd like due to half the team not being here yet and also taking a few games for the new squad to gel (as well as having on paper a tougher start fixture wise) so I've practically assumed that it will be a poor reflection on our prospects for the season already and have attributed far less value to it.

*Unless of course we're somehow sat in the top 6, in which case GTFI and that without a full squad, but that's not very likely given all the above.

Aye, but both were Premier League teams when they won the cup, and were relegated in 18th place.

Birmingham won the League Cup.
Wigan won the FA Cup.

The cup games in 96-97 were fun too, but going down wasn't, neither was watching the best player we've ever had leave.

We'll not get top 5 Prem in any of our lifetimes, but we may sneak Europe again one day, probably through the cups/ win a cup, but only when we've got a stable enough league position in the prem, to realistically challenge for them.

Winning the cup and the UEFA run was probably the highlight/ most fun/ best achievement we could ever have as a club, but the chance of a cup win this year is probably near 1 in 1000. If we get into the prem the odds of that probably reduce 20 fold.

Next after that is the fun of promotion, or the cumulative impact of winning enough games where you get that, even a play-off final win.

Taking things as they come is fine, but doesn't work if you're not prepared and the best way to prepare is to focus on what is most important at the time. When you have a thin squad and are currently the level of a play off side then you're not in a position to waste points. If we get enough points and some players in then there's nothing saying we can't go up automatically and stay in the prem for a decade. Most of us would enjoy that and the 10 years of cup runs which come with it, plus we get to see some of the worlds best players.

I'd take promotion, relegation and 3 years back in the champo before I'd choose getting to the final of another cup, never mind SF or QF, whilst in the champo. A final or even semi-final is not really possible these days anyway, for a champo club like us. The quarters is about as good as it gets, once you're at QF/ SF stage the funs over, like Chelsea wasn't much fun.

The spending wasn't the problem when we last came down, the problem was who spent it, whether that was Monk, or the club not buying players who Monk could get a tune out of, if he could get a tune out of any. I suppose a good manager can be worth a lot more than spending £50m or whatever.

Disagree with every word you've written. And the punctuation.
