Boro on the telly, trivia anyone know?

It was Fischer's 50th yesterday, so what better way to spend it than watching the highlights of the 87-88 promotion season while having a beer or two with him and Miniature G. Who knew that everyone got so annoyed at us spending £200k on Trevor Senior - there were people asking where their bloody money was from the liquidation if Boro were spending transfer fees. Tyne Tees approached Gibson; this was the result.

Anyway, one of everyone's of a certain age favourite Boro games that year - the promotion clash with Villa on Valentines Day, live on ITV. Yes, a Division 2 game, nationally broadcast on terrestrial telly.

Discussion turned to whether this was the first ever time Boro had been live in full on the telly.

Secondly, what was the next Boro game that was live in full on the TV? Was it the Chelsea game in the first Premier League Season on Sky? A rotten 0-0 draw on a Friday, complete with Sumos and the Sky Strikers?

And when was the the next time we were live on terrestrial TV? I have vague memories of the Stockport League Cup game being on ITV, and I assume the Chesterfield semi was on as well?

Anyone?

Happy birthday @Bob Fischer .

On the questions, on the basis that the Villa game was the first live second division game on telly I think it must have been Boro's first on the basis that live league games were fairly new then and Boro hadn't, up until that point, been in any of the games that hitherto had qualiified for being on telly ie Cup Finals.

Wasn’t there a game on terrestrial TV in 1988/89 in the old First Division? Arsenal maybe? Brian Moore on the old Ayresome Park gantry.

We were on terrestrial telly quite a lot during the 1993/94 and 1994/95 seasons, back when we had Roger Tames and Duncan Wood presenting ITV’s Sunday afternoon coverage. Big Jack used to co-commentate quite often.

That Chelsea game on a Friday night, Kevin Hitchcock was absolutely incredible throughout. He must’ve made about six world-class saves.

Yeah Chelsea & Oldham at home were both definitely televised live by Sky in that first season of the Premier League.

In fact if anyone has nothing to do for 2 hours and wants to see how bad we were then the whole Oldham game can be watched here

I think as well, the first leg of the League Cup semi final in 1991/92 must’ve been on ITV? The second leg wasn’t on but I think they used to show one leg from each semi final in those days.

I was in the centre of the Holgate that day.

Villa away semifinal in Zenith was also on live on some channel. probably BSKYB as you say
Couldn't get time off work to go so remember watching it in old "Shaky" pub in town

The Mowbray Match was the first full live 90 minutes of league football outside the top division. At the time i think ITV were scrambling to get any football on TV.

The Chelsea playoff games were not live home or away on satellite or terrestrial tv, Pretty sure ITV had the match highlights, as I remember watching the Bradford home leg on ITV when i got home from the match that night.

Both the ZDS ties against villa were on BSKYB 100%

I await Erimus to search through his VHS collection to confirm all of the above.

So you would assume ZDS Final was as well.
