Check out all you need to know ahead of Nottingham Forest's match against Middlesbrough in the match preview, in association with Football Index.

Nottingham Forest will be looking to keep up their good form when Middlesbrough visit The City Ground on Wednesday night (kick-off 7pm).

The Reds have won their last two outings on Trentside, taking their unbeaten run to seven games in all competitions and they will be looking to extend that against Neil Warnock's side.

Small

Boro find themselves in and around the play-off picture and will be looking for a positive result themselves to enhance their top-six credentials.

Team news

Chris Hughton could name an unchanged line-up after their impressive performance against Millwall on the weekend. Alex Mighten and Scott McKenna both came into the starting line-up and impressed, while there are plenty of options available should Hughton wish to make changes.

Luke Freeman is back in full training and is getting closer to being involved, with Fouad Bachirou also joining in full training. Jack Colback and Harry Arter remain sidelined through injury.

From the opposition

Middlesbrough manager Neil Warnock is hoping that Duncan Watmore and Britt Assombalonga can both make more of an impact on the game against The Reds than they did against Birmingham, with the pair overcoming COVID-19.

He said: “They should be okay – they’ve both definitely looked a lot better.

"I couldn’t have played them. I wanted to play Britt because I thought he was outstanding at Birmingham, but I couldn’t have played him looking at him on Friday. I never thought he’d even be on the bench.

Small

"He was a lot brighter yesterday though, and said he felt a lot better. So did Duncan, so I’ve no problems at all with those two now. They’ll be in my thoughts from the start now.”

Referee

Andy Woolmer is the referee in charge of Wedneday night's match at The City Ground. Woolmer, from Northamptonshire, has officiated 17 matches so far this season across the Championship, League One, League Two and the FA Cup, showing 54 yellow cards and no red cards.
He has overseen 16 Forest matches in his career, most recently the league defeat against Barnsley at Oakwell in November, with Forest winning eight of those games.

Woolmer will be assisted by Graham Kane and Matthew Jones, with Leigh Doughty as the fourth official.

Nottingham Forest will be aiming to extend their unbeaten run when they take on Middlesbrough at the City Ground this evening.

Chris Hughton’s side have gone seven games without defeat in all competitions, including winning three on the spin ahead of tonight’s Championship fixture.

They bagged three goals in a match for the first time this season on Saturday, as they saw off Millwall 3-1, so will face Boro in high spirits.

Team news

Luke Freeman is back in training for the Reds after a hernia problem which required surgery.

He is getting closer to being back available for selection, but is not expected to be in contention for this evening’s clash.

Jack Colback and Harry Arter are still sidelined with injury, while fellow midfielder Fouad Bachirou is now joining in full training - although boss Hughton has admitted he could leave on loan this month.

It could be an unchanged line-up for the hosts, after the weekend’s victory over the Lions.

Hughton demanding another strong display

Nottingham Forest manager Chris Hughton knows his side will have to stand up to another difficult test on Wednesday night as they host play-off chasing Middlesbrough at The City Ground.

Neil Warnock's men have enjoyed a strong first half of the campaign, currently sitting seventh in the table and four points outside the top six, and Hughton is well aware of the threat posed by a manager who he has plenty of admiration for.

Speaking ahead of the game, he said: "The reason why Neil is there is because he's a very good, experienced manager and promotion is what he delivers. We ran them close up there in October but I thought they were better than us on the day and it was a game where one opportunity sealed the game for them.

They're in seventh place for a reason because they've been consistent in the way they play and you always know that you'll have a tough game against a team managed by Neil.

"I have a huge respect for Neil and I know him quite well. The alternative for him is that he doesn't manage a football club and I know that he will always want to manage for as long as he can. He loves the day-to-day training, the matches and the challenges that football has to offer because he always goes to clubs where he can take on that challenge. I'm sure he'll be taken away from football screaming as and when the time comes!

"We'll need a performance exactly like the one we delivered on Saturday if we are to get another three points. On paper we're playing against a better team than Millwall and that means anything less won't be enough to get us the result. The players demand a performance from each other and when you're on a decent run you always want to continue that."

Saturday's impressive 3-1 victory over Millwall stretched The Reds' unbeaten run in all competitions to seven matches and Hughton admits he has been pleased with the improvement in his team's displays over recent weeks.

He said: "It was a good performance at the weekend and having analysed the game in more detail, it is obvious there were some very performers within it. Certainly, I can think of games where we've got into more frequent goalscoring positions than we did on Saturday but the key moments went our way and overall I thought it was a strong all-round performance.

"I would say we're not far off where I would like us to be but to be the complete package we will have to do it more consistently. What separates us from those teams at the top is goalscoring, there's no doubt about that. We need to make sure we are making the most of the chances we create but certainly I've been much happier with the all-round performance of the team in this current run of form.

"I was delighted to see Ryan Yates get his goal on Saturday. He's got terrific energy to get from box to box but it's now about the timing of his runs into the opposition penalty area so he can add more goals to his game. He has been hugely important for us in a midfield where we have had injury problems and I'm pleased that someone like Ryan is having a good time because he constantly wants to learn and improve his game."

In spite of our decent run, does anybody give a **** anymore?

Draw for us and hopefully Wayne Rooney's Sheep Shaggers hammered by Bournemouth tonight.

Not really fussed to be honest Smiffy, although I would like us to pull away from the relegation zone. I remember League One days, and I didn't enjoy it one bit.

I reckon we'll beat Boro 1-0.

Derby look ****ed. Unpaid wages. Relegation zone. Takeover dragging on. I really hope they go down.

Nottingham Forest v Middlesbrough – Jonny Howson return may provide timely boost for Boro

AS much as Middlesbrough’s prospects may revolve around what they do in the transfer market this month, it might also be governed by when key players come back into the fray.

Boro’s fortunes are precariously placed ahead of tonight’s visit to a venue which has not proved overly hospitable over the years.
Maintain some decent form and they have every chance of being in the top-six shake-up come the business end of the season.
If results drop, then Boro – who face an in-form Forest side this evening – are likely to fall away towards the mid-table.

As it stands on the incoming front, Neil Warnock anticipates that he does not expect any new strikers to come in to add another option to a forward pool who have struggled for goals this season.

A successful move for a long-time target in winger Yannick Bolaise also appears by no means certain, according to Warnock.
On the flip side, striker Ashley Fletcher – out with a serious hamstring problem since September – is nearing the end of his rehabilitation and could return by the end of the month and be akin to a new signing for Warnock.

Midfielder Jonny Howson is back in the fray and could start tonight, while defender Grant Hall is continuing to progress in his road back to fitness.

Last six games: Nottingham Forest DDDWWW; Middlesbrough WWLWLL.

Referee: A Woolmer (Northants).

Last time: Nottingham Forest 1 Middlesbrough 1, December 10, 2019; Championship.

Cheers as per roofie

Since 1947 -
13 wins
22 defeats
26 draws

Is there any other team that Boro have such a poor record against?
6 wins at their place, 11 draws & 17 defeats, scoring 30 goals & conceding 60, not the best
Over a long period of games them & Birmingham are awful records at their place

A sad reminder of how we all need to look after one another.

Nottingham Forest to celebrate life of key worker Tony Chadbourne

Nottingham Forest will be celebrating the life of paramedic Tony Chadbourne before Wednesday night’s match against Middlesbrough after he died from COVID-19.

Tony, 46, was a lifelong supporter of the club, having first started to attend matches at The City Ground with his brother Martyn and dad Michael in 1980, and served as a member of the emergency services since starting his career with East Midlands Ambulance Service in 1997.

The club will be remembering Tony’s life with the first-team squad wearing warm-up t-shirts featuring an image of Tony, a tribute to Tony in the matchday programme and dedications on social media and the big screen at The City Ground before the game, with both sides taking part in a minutes’ applause before kick-off.

Tony, known as ‘Chad’ or ‘Chadders’, started out as a Junior Red in the Main Stand before moving to the open terrace in the Bridgford End and starting to attend away matches. Tony’s favourite memories of standing on the Bridgford terrace included Johnny Metgod’s free kick against West Ham in 1986, Stuart Pearce’s free kick against Coventry in the 1990 Littlewoods Cup semi-final, and Des Walker scoring his only goal against Luton, with several visits to Wembley also among the highlights. He also started going to England matches over the last few years alongside brother Martyn, going to as many away matches as possible as he loved to travel and they attended the Nations League finals in Portugal in 2019.

EsME9pIXAAAnWAJ.jpeg
A keen player for Keyworth United when he was younger, Tony also took up refereeing until his work commitments took priority. He started his career with the East Midlands Ambulance Service in 1997 in Lincolnshire as an ambulance technician before transferring back to Nottinghamshire and qualifying as a paramedic in 2007, working as a paramedic team leader at Beechdale Ambulance Station and since 2017 as a paramedic clinical operations manager at Newark Ambulance Station.

Tony worked on numerous occasions as a paramedic on matchdays at The City Ground, including the League Cup tie between Forest and Leicester in 2007 when Leicester player Clive Clarke collapsed, with Tony rushing to his aid and helping to save his life.

Tony loved working matchdays at The City Ground, even if it meant giving up his season ticket for the day, but he did so for the love of his job. A humble and dedicated man, Tony will be greatly missed by his family and friends, both in England and in Poland, and all at Nottingham Forest.

Is the match free for season card holders and pledge to renew fans with it being away? The Boro website says it is.
