Peter Wilson has now cropped up in two threads in 2 days. I have to admit I had never heard of him before yesterday! Read more about him. At the time he captained Australia in West Germany 1974 WC he was playing for a club called Safeway United - which was a club in Wollongong NSW.

I am not surprised Id never heard of him. He made his 1 appearance for Boro in the season before I first went - 1968 v Charlton in a 1-1 draw at AP. A Geordie who then emigrated to Sydney and went on to captain his country. Some story!

Great thread this.... from a Sunderland website I found this quote from Stan:

I joined Middlesbrough late on in my career and this was to work for the great Raich Carter, the team were struggling but I went there thinking I would learn from one of the greatest players and everyone was in awe of the man. It never went to plan though as he rarely looked over his newspaper and never took training.

So who are the players on the programme cover? I thought at first number 9 was Paul Mariner but he didn't join them until 1973. I think Tony Waiters is the manager and Jim Furnell the 'keeper. Jim Hinch number 9?
I've done some research and Jim Hinch is indeed number 9. 7 is Keith Allen and number 3 is Dave Provan.

He later became virtually a recluse, I believe.

Remember my dad telling me when many years ago, maybe around the 1974 world cup, the 38th player to play one game only for the mighty Boro, according to my stats mind
