Back in pre season training already.

Could be a great decision, could be a mad one and risk burning out the players

Even the non league sides are starting next week, first friendlies start of July.

The season seems to start earlier each season and finishes later.

there’s something to be said for being fitter at the start of the season could mean extra points

when Europe used to start early some of those teams used to get some good starts

"It’s claimed Kompany will take his squad to Portugal for a 10-day training camp before enjoying another 10-day break, before their proper pre-season begins in earnest."

I guess that will help the squad retain their core fitness and allow more dedicated work when ‘proper’ pre-season starts. Different way of approaching things, but not a bad idea.

A longer pre season allows more time to get ready. It’s probably better for the body than pushing the squad to the limit over a few weeks. A lot of players spend their summers in training camps these days anyway.

I suggested Kompany before Wilder, Top man. I think they will be safe. Very happy with Carrick, but Kompany is class and will move on up soon enough. I think the term burn out is a myth.

I'm sure there'll be a lot of science behind their training methods. I doubt they are training at full intensity and will potentially be doing a lot of S+C conditioning to boost their baseline fitness levels before the season.

As said up the thread, if you can hit the ground running and pick up a couple of cheap wins at the beginning of the season because you are at 100% while other teams are still at 90% then it can be massive for a team likely to be battling relegation.

I listened to Shearer talking about playing in the World Cup and saying that after the full season you're physically at your best and raring to go.

I think burn out will be more of a psychological problem due to mismanagement. Putting too much pressure on players.
