Buying a car- haggling!!

Ive never had finance or a bank loan, apart from a mortgage. I wouldnt know where to start. Good old fashioned cash and a fair deal for everyone.

Me neither although I have no interest in buying a new car or something I cannot afford that will leave me in debt. Cash only.

The car isn’t in Teesside. It’s up in Newcastle. I would be happy paying £12k for it but not above £12,200. I would say they still get a healthy profit and I get a discount. Win win?

Should you still haggle at the car supermarkets? It never even occurred to me that you might be able to get a discount there. I managed to get a discount based on their price match when I found an identical car afterwards but otherwise I wouldn't have asked.

I find you get a token gesture at most from haggling nowadays as they are only interested in finance deals. I just use autotrader and a phone, it means being prepared to travel a bit for the best deal. You can see the variance in prices for the same car on there.

I would be interested to know more about taking the finance option and then settling up the next day, presume you have a 14 day cooling off period meaning you just pay the agreed price?

The market doesnt lie. If you can find a similar car for less money then go elsewhere - if not then the current car would seem to be about the right price.

If the dealer thinks the car will sit for a while then they will generally discount to move it on, if they are confident of shifting it then they will hold out for the price they have offered you.

At the end of the day, are you buying a car or setting a price? As others have said, if its a good motor then its worth paying for.

All fair enough, but if you don’t buy it, someone else will. If it’s a decent car in good order, it should save you money in the long term. Life’s too short, go and buy it, get some mats or something thrown in instead.

Life is too short to spend 15 minutes to an hour or so out of your life to do some googling and send some emails in order to save £500-£1000+? Your life expectancy must be significantly shorter than mine as I can’t earn that in an hour so am happy to spend the time looking for the best price.

Got a car last August. They weren't interested in haggling until I opened up the idea of finance. Got the price I wanted and paid it off in full the next day.

Just check there's no early repayment fees and you're laughing (y)

Haggle over the fee before talking about how you are going to pay for it. You lose a bit of leverage as you aren’t trading in although in my experience they will prefer to give you more off than more for your old car. Once the fee is done then try and get some discounts on extras like service plans etc then before you shake ask for a tank of fuel to seal the deal. Some of them will give you the option of finance to get so many free services and then even if you pay it off after just one month you still get the services so it’s worth taking out even if you pay a tiny bit extra on one payment before cancelling.

A large, reputable forecourt dealership selling a car for £12,500.
A cash buyer with no trade in or interest in finance.
What sort of deal should you get?
Car comes fully serviced, new MOT, and delivered to door.
They’ve only offered to knock £100 off!!
I was told by someone in the trade to always make an offer towards the back end of the month when they’ll be more inclined to knock more off to catch a buyer as they may be under sales targets . Makes sense I guess for salesmen if you’re boss is checking your sales figures .

We are looking into getting a brand new car as ours is starting to cost more money in repairs than its ultimately worth.

We are looking at an Octavia, hatchback or estate, I want the estate version, missus isn't fussed. Definitely intrigued by the leasing option, seen some really good deals online but I'm worried they sound too good to be true.

With the car been brand new it would be covered under a minimum of a 3 year warranty wouldn't it? I know you can get maintenance included but doing the maths it's cheaper for us to maintain it ourselves than adding on extra to the monthly sum.

With a brand new Skoda you would get 3 year warranty (under 60k miles) - some other manufacturers offer upto 7 years.

A dealership will get at least £500 commission on the finance possibly upto £1500 and the sales person might get something too. The finance company is making £500 a year on a £10k loan in some cases. Borrowing at 1% and lending at 6%

Sometimes they are keen to part exchange if you have a decent second hand car.

I found as a cash buyer I could only get small amounts off from main dealers.

I have found it useful to use the manufacturers offers say when a car is changing and you buy the last of the old version

Audi were offering £1000 a straight off any new car if you took the finance say 50% on a £13k car (this was 2014) for 2 years which was around £500 interest so in effect a £500 discount. Others give you £250 off if you take test drive or £500 off if you take their insurance for 1 year or colour discounts SEAT give £500 off any red car.

Don't keep changing your car if you are buying from a dealer/trader.

The main franchised dealers in general have the best second hand cars, other dealers tend to get cars that are not quite the same. I still like buying brand new because you know the history and the owner. Even buying nearly new there is the risk of buying old hire cars, ones from crashes, friday afternoon cars, badly treated motability, driving instructor cars, pool cars etc. Buying privately has virtually no legal protection.

At present you have to stay local when looking, although businesses can bring vehicles to you.

You can go on any company site and look in whole of uk
They will bring car to local garage for about £50 which you only pay if you don’t buy car.
Done it with last 2 cars I have bought

Glad to see somebody else knows the value of their time (y) Some things are worth doing, some aren’t, and some things can be done whilst resting or watching TV, so can be double bubble!

It’s like when I see some bloke on 100k a year painting the fence on his day off, with a 2” brush. I just look at him like, “just do an extra hour at work mate, then you can sit and watch some other guy do it, with a bottle of wine” 😂

Unless im doing something which can help burn off some calories, without annoying me, then I’d rather just work longer and then pay someone else out of the difference for low value stuff, but high value, like car negotiating and houses, it’s worth a lot of time.

it’s like people that drive 5 miles to get “5p cheaper fuel” each week, for half a tank, not realising it’s burning that difference in fuel, putting miles one the car and costing half an hours time each week. Yet they don’t change their gas and electric every year, which takes 5 mins and can save £100’s 😂

No such thing as haggling at main dealers, that went a long time ago. You are lucky to get a set of car mats there days.

Now managed £250 off. I was pushing to pay £12,200 as I said earlier so now only £50 stands in between. If he hasn’t phoned by lunch time I’ll give in and buy it.

Not true, especially on new cars which is why Carwow exists.

Also, I got 1% finance instead of 6%, with a bit of leg work, that saved my about 10k compared to what the garage was offering initially, and about 5k better than any bank.

Not as easy on used, but still savings can be made in the right circumstances.
