Buying your own vehicle warranty

I've been looking at buying a car and the few dealers ive spoken to only offer 3 months warranty. These are big main dealer car sales.
Has anyone sourced their own warranty and if so, where from and roughly how much should a year cover cost?
Based on a mid range SUV type car, Nissan Quashqui and similar. No big engine or 4 wheel drive. Just a standard car.

I had one. The small print is key. I had a newish VW. Engine light came on. The warranty would not pay for a main VW dealer to do repairs, because their hourly rate was more than they were prepared to pay. This was not in print in the policy. And yet, in the small print, I was obliged to get the car serviced at a main dealer.

Sending the warranty people the itemised repair bill was not enough. They needed to see a copy of the actual diagnostic report (this is not mentioned in the policy ) , which the dealer could or would not give me when I went back a few days later.

I work in insurance, and even by skim reading my policy book, I knew more about it than the hopeless "helpline" people, who did not know what they were talking about. I had to scan and send part of my policy to them to explain why they were liable for the cost of my particular repair, as they did not understand their own warranty wording.

That was a few years ago, and was enough to put me off. I am never going to bother again. Too much hassle, too many small print clauses, and also some other clauses that they insist are there, but did not appear in the policy, or are hidden away.

I have a policy which came with the car (1year) and have kept it up since (coming up 3 more years). It has paid out without quibble and the place I go to tells me that they're very good. If the rates are too high for the policy they'll pay so much (most of it) and you will need to top it up, but you can opt to pay a bit more premium to raise the level that they'll pay. They turned me down for the last two claims, one was for some obscure part in the adblu system that wasn't on their list and the other was for an air conditioning part that they said wasn't a failure but was wear and tear. In all I've saved my premiums plus about £800, and the place I go to for servicing has looked after everything for me, not had to bother with anything at all.

Any names please of policies?
I’ve just read up in one and said it covered engine cooling system, but in the “not covered” section: hoses and pipes. I know they perish but surely a weak link in any engine system are the lightweight parts that are more prone to failing?

A hose or pipe is presumably not an expensive repair. However, if a coolant hose or pipe fails, and consequently your engine overheats and dies, or your car bursts into flames, does the policy pay for the whole thing?

Personally I don't think warranties are worth it...
I had car with an intermittent electrcal fault and it was under manufacturers warranty... because they couldn't find the fault and it wasn't showing up on their computer that was it.
They just gave me the car back, no offer of a replacement, nowt !
