Can We Campaign For People To Register For Postal Vote

I got my polling card yesterday for the May elections and when you see the list of permissible photo ID it is really appalling. There are just so many people that will not have the permitted ID, especially young people and those that have neither passports or driving licences. It is so stacked in favour of over 60s it is scandalous.
In any case - lets see if we can encourage as many people as possible to register for a postal vote. The deadline is really early as well 18th April.
Here is the list for those that have not seen it yet.

It’s shocking rob and the fact that so many people have inadvertently disenfranchised almost without their knowledge is nothing short of criminal.

Btw the actual number of so called election fraud that this is set to prevent is so neglible it doesn’t even register as a figure.

From the election commission own web site

In the past five years, there is no evidence of large-scale electoral fraud.

There were only 11 convictions and 16 cautions issued by police.

The overwhelming majority of cases either resulted in the police taking no further action or were locally resolved by the police issuing words of advice.

Yes 16 cases16!!!!

You’re letting your justified anger cloud your logic on this narrow point and draw a false equivalence. As others have said the allowed IDs are all issued by public bodies after stringent checks. The suggested alternatives aren’t. I can’t use my senior railcard either, for the same reasons.

Won’t argue with you there though.
The senior railcard doesn't have a photo on it. The over-60 Oyster card does and that can be used. So does the young persons' Oyster card but that can't be used. Young people, who are less likely to have voted before, are being discriminated against by making it harder for them to vote. We should be making it easier for people to vote. This is gerrymandering. It's as simple as that.

so you can't vote without a valid photo id?

I'm not doubting the data but how would they know if electoral fraud had actually been committed? They must only pick it up if someone attempts to vote after someone else has already voted using their details but people voting using someone's vote they know isn't going to vote could go undetected.

I'm not expecting the figure to be significant enough for it to be something that needed a change to the system but I assume it is higher than 16.

Anyway - lets get back to raising awareness - you have until 18th April to register for a postal vote or 25th April to get a Voter Authority Certificate.

Mine does - its filed digitally in the Trainline app and shows photo, name, validity etc

The number of MPs reportedly being
investigated for sexual misconduct allegations in a report last year in the Guardian was 56, not far off 10% of all MPs.

From Jedi's post voter fraud is clearly not an issue. We know the reasons why this is being implemented. Where is the opposition? We should be encouraging the public to vote.

I will have to use a postal vote as I don't have any of the items on the list. I will make sure I do. Thanks for the info on dates.

But surely we've all seen those nationally broadcast government adverts on TV and online and heard them on the radio telling us all about this and how to get a Voter Authority Certificate. Haven't we?

This is gerrymandering. It's as simple as that.
But it’s not though as It’s far worse than that though. As gerrymandering just moved the votes around to advantage one side over the other, what this does is remove their vote altogether.

It’s truly shocking.

Is disenfranchising. Something we haven't done in this country since we allowed women to vote.

I do agree that Labour should be thinking about a campaign to raise awareness.

We do have the local by elections coming up and that will give a good indication of the direction of travel for this tactic.

I have received my voting card. It lists the forms of acceptable ID and also that if your photo ID has expired it is still acceptable if is still a good likeness of you. I will therefore be using my out of date passport. It may help others, please pass it on.

Bit risky. Remember not to dye your hair, grow/shave a beard or get a nose piercing.

Registering for postal vote is easy.

The Voter authority certificate lasts 10 years, so do it now for llocal elections and use it at the next general election.

I don't recall any stringent checks being made when I got my bus pass, which is eligible, although younger persons' ones are not.

Although it's clearly designed to disenfranchise the young it may well bite the government on the ar$e. If there are more 'confused' elderly voters than disorganised young the Tory vote share could go down.
