Can we catch Sheff Utd?

If they **** up their game in hand, or one of the matches before, I'll think there's a chance.

It's still a very longshore though.

Last team to beat West Brom at home was Sheff Utd (in october) Since then they’ve played:
Blackpool
Stoke
Rotherham
Preston
Reading
Coventry
Blackburn
So no one in the current top 6. Gives me a bit more optimism.

Looking to next weeks game against WBA, their last 6 homes games they have won 5 and drawn 1. Scored 10 and only conceded 1. Going to be a tough match
Their form against the top 10 sides is won 1, drawn 6 lost 5. We have nothing to fear, we can go there and get at least a draw.

On a more analysis based view, rather than statistical, they have one paced midfield, We can pass through that with ease.

I would say that no team sustains a points per game of 2.5 over an extended period. That said, the best run I remember seeing was Villa in 18-19. I just checked back and in their last 13 games they won 10, drew 2 and lost 1. If I remember correctly, that run coincided with Grealish returning from injury; they lost the 1 game he missed. Same season, Norwich won 9 and drew 4 of their last 13: they had Pukki and Buendia on fire.

If we keep Akpom, Archer and (I reckon) McGree fit and on form, then I reckon 30 points is possible for us. That would put us on 87 points and Sheffield Utd would need 26 points from 14 games (1.86ppg): that is on par with their overall form under Heckingrattle though better than their current form. Sheffield Utd desperately need at least one win against Blackburn or Watford in their next two games to get their season back on track. If not, they risk watching us overtake them and that will be hard to recover from.

That all said, they are still favourites. The odds are lengthening though.

Their game in hand is v Reading & scheduled for 7th March.

Before the international break they play:
Watford (h)
Spurs (h) (mid-week, settled on the night using extra-time and penalties if required)
Blackburn (a)
Reading (a) (mid-week)
Luton (h)
Sunderland (a) (mid-week)
West Brom (h)

We play:
West Brom (a)
Reading (h)
Swansea (a)
Stoke (h) (mid-week)
Preston (h)

Whatever happens it’s bloody exciting
Aye, it certainly is.

It’s a game that west Brom have to win. As we seen at bramell lane this will be good news for archer who will have space to run into.

Akpom gets more space to operate in also.

Those 2 are negated more when the defence sit in. Akpom came alive after the goal yesterday and was spearheading a lot of attacks, before they struggled to get into the game

So if anyone is going to the hawthorns and getting a result I’d say boro would be a prime candidate to do it

Will be a tough game

Have they got the players to freshen things up and rotate.

We got the likes of forss and howson rested up yesterday.

It’s almost as if the stars are aligning dare I say

This weekend (& every one after that! ;) ) is key.

Bad result for them, good for us & they go into a tough run of games with us a point behind. The cup becomes a distraction, they are having to rest players against decent teams & still get results and the fixtures are coming thick & fast.

Conversely after the weekend there could be a 7 point gap again with their game in hand still, they get to leave the pressures of the league behind & enjoy a game against top class opposition, rotation seems to freshen the team rather than weaken it, the players are enjoying their football & have a nice break to look forward to.

We've been on a fabulous run, long may it continue.

In their last game vs brum corberan picked a strange team with new signing allbrightson playing on the right wing and he moved their best player for me; jed Wallace to a number 10 role and they were awful. Got beat 2-0!
His new manager bubble burst a couple of weeks ago and a shocker of a result in their derby….tomorrow versus Watford will be interesting!

I would say that no team sustains a points per game of 2.5 over an extended period.

What do you consider an extended period?

We've averaged exactly 2.5 points over 16 matches. That's more than a third of the season.

While we all know runs like that come to an end at some point, the gamblers fallacy that we must be due a defeat doesn't apply.

10 wins from the remaining 13 will, I suspect, be enough. That would leave Sheffield Utd needing 25 points from 14 matches, assuming their GD is still better. That would still be good form: 1.78 points per game. They've averaged 1.66 over the last 6.

So, though I expect us to approach every game with the intention of winning, we should not let a setback or two in individual matches derail our confidence or momentum.

After 16 matches, this is more than a new manager bounce: this is the real us.

Think Corberan is a very good manager, at Huddersfield he often changed line ups and tactics depending on the opposition. He sussed Boro out at the Riverside after we dicked them at their place earlier in the season. So it will definitely be a tough game but the way things are going we must have a great chance of three points.
Actually would of liked him to replace Wilder thankfully gibbo knew better 😊
