Can you admit that Southgate is doing a great job yet?

I've said it ALL along and haven't wavered. He has been superb for the country and after this competition it's going to be a huge decision to appoint someone that doesn't row back the belief, results, culture and performances.

The negativity was so over the top after the last game, we can't rip teams apart every game, no team does. USA are a decent team and did a good job to limit us, but we have bounced back with a brilliant second half after exhausting them first half.

Remarkably, despite the claims about playing with the handbrake on Southgate sides have scored 21% of ALL our world cup finals goals. 59% win rate in tournament football.

No I will not admit that. Cause in reality he ain't achieved nothing.
except broken most records as an england manager. The idea that you either win a trophy or you are an a abject failure is ludicrous

Lets be honest if we went on and won this, we'll still get some 'fans' complaining that the style of play is boring, he should have picked xy and z instead of his favourites ab and c, he had an lucky run, or some other nonsense

There's always something isn't there. It's weird. People on his back for supposedly easy runs of games. On his back for not starting Grealish, or is it Bellingham, or is it Foden, or is it Maddison. People on his back for picking Maguire. He wins the nations league - its just a friendly who cares. Lose games in the nations league - sack him!

Reminds me a bit of Boro 2005 and 2006 and the fans who took Bernies "papering over the cracks" comments too seriously. Some people don't realise an era is the good times until it's too late.

Every chance we go back to being a nation that waits decades between wins in knockout rounds again after Southgate goes.

Nope…One of the strongest squads we’ve ever had at our disposal but one of the worst managers. Way to cautious and holding us back. Even if he won the World Cup I’d still think that as with a World Class manager with this crop of players I’d be thinking we have a great chance to win afew of them in a row and afew Euros aswell just for the crack. Sadly not with Gareth.

Someone who speaks sense.
People were absolutely slaying england after the usa game, now we best Wales gareth is the messiah again?
This team is a fantastic england team no doubt about it, we got to the euro final in spite of southgate not because of him. In major tournaments under him who have we beat? Croatia beat us in 2018, albeit looking back we had a worse team than them on the day but the game was there to be won. Lost to Italy, Italy! Who haven't even qualified for the last 2 world cups at the euros, got battered for most of that game too.
So yeah until he actually wins something, anything!!! I'll take a nations league at this point! Then he is not done a great job .
Not done a bad job by any means, but certainly no great.

I really hope this is satire.

I have always said under Southgate it feels different in major tournaments because he doesn't get done by the banana skins, we usually get to where we 'should get' (and in this case it may be that we don't go further than the quarters if we get France but I hope he gets the players more optimistic than that).

If we don't win a major under Southgate my hunch is that it will be a long time before we win one again, he is England's second best ever manager without a shadow of a doubt.

I say this as someone who criticised him heavily as Boro manager and was nonplussed even after the 2018 World Cup.

We didn't win the Nations league, we got to the semis and lost to Holland (IIRC).

Southgate has made us difficult to beat in major competitions, that cannot be disputed and his record is easily up there as one the best England managers. But he is stubborn and still struggles to change a game when things aren't going well and that is ultimately what is held against him. Saying that I was impressed with the way we came out in the 2nd half as it felt like the team had been given a rocket, but can't help but feel annoyed that we didn't do that against the US.

Worryingly I think we'll revert back to type against Senegal by bringing back Mount, Sterling and/or Saka, along with dropping Foden and Rashford as Southgate sets up a team that will be difficult to beat again rather than focus on our strength which is attacking teams and forcing them to defend.

Beating a really really shít Wales team exaggerates where we are at tonight. I still don't believe he is sure of his first 11 or best formation. If he can beat some of the big teams this tournament then I will change my mind. Having said that France apart the standard of teams has been extremely poor so far this tournament

People said the overall standard was poor in 2018, right up until the final. France beat a Croatia they were always expected to beat and then everyone decided France were (and still are) brilliant.

TBF Brazil, Spain, France and England have all stood out in this tournament imho, and then Germany, Portugal, Netherlands and Argentina aren't out of it yet either.

I think its been a good World Cup so far and am already missing the 10am matches.
