Car Insurance shocker

So last month I got pinged doing 60 on the motorway in a reduced to 50 section. Got a fine and 3 points, all fair enough, totally justified.

Decided to be a good lad and inform my insurance company, which I was able to do online. Expected my premium to go up a bit but when editing details also corrected a couple of things which looks like they were wrong because they don't automatically update - i.e. held my license for 4 years more than they thought, and now no under 16s living with me.

Moment of truth comes when I found out how much extra they want from me - turns out the owe me £8. Very surprised those seemingly insignificant details outweigh a shiny new motoring conviction. Not complaining mind.

Car insurance is shocking generally!

I've just renewed as my premium went up by £200 for no apparent reason. I did my usual compare the meerkat thing and it went down by ~£100 and still thought it was expensive. Tried Go Compare and it was another £100 cheaper again - so it seems the comparison site
you use has a massive influence on the results.

It's the same dance every year.

The wife’s renewal came through in December and it had randomly dropped by £80 first time in years I didn’t shop around.

Our horsebox on the other hand just came through with a 30% rise. It’s a 7.5 tonne but it’s 33 years old worth feck all and does about 1800miles a year, there’s more welded plate than original floor and chassis on the thing.

I think at renewal time, even if it is an automatic renewal, the insurance company will send you a renewal quote which you should check for accuracy. That's on the individual to do.

It is. I think this was the first year my renewal was cheaper than shopping around so I just clicked the Accept button. Could probably have saved even more.

My insurance was due last week. The current insurer sent an automated email with a price £100 dearer than last year.
Go compare had already send a quote offering one that was £50 cheaper than last year.
I went to cancel my insurance in case in was on auto-renew. They asked me why I wanted to stop and who said what and who offered how much. 20 seconds later, my 'new quote was ready' It was actually cheaper than the gocompare price and came with a hire car.
This kind of practice should be illegal.

Note that for consumer insurance it is illegal to offer a cheaper deal to new Insureds than those renewing.

Some years ago My insurance went up by quite a lot after I informed them that a car had ran into the back of mine. I was not making a claim, just following procedure. The person who ran into the back of me admitted fault and paid for all damage which wasn't much. When it came to renewal time my quote increased by a couple of hundred. When I asked why I was told I was now a high risk. Lesson learnt. Tell insurance companies fk all. They are all scammers.
And don't get me started on unemployment insurance. Or pet insurance. They are nowt but bstds.

Year before last I got my car insurance quote through but before I placed it I picked up 3 points, rang the insurance company (spoke to an actual person!) told him and said he'd better requote based on the points, he came back and said it was 60 quid cheaper! I said that can’t be right and he said ‘listen mate if that what the computer says we don’t argue.’ Happy days.

Im offering insurance on car insurance fluctuations if anyone interested. First year fee is £150 . If after 12 months without any incident or changes to policy your renewal goes up , I offer to pay half of the increase. Then you give me another £150 for the net years insurance on insurance cover.

I didn't think you need to tell your insurance company if you get points, unless it's above a certain amount, until your next renewal ?
Well it's part of the driver information you supply when taking out the policy, so I guess if you don't then you're knowingly supplying inaccurate information. Telling them mid-policy might be a greyer area but I though it was worth doing just to see what the impact was.

Now if I can work out a way where these refunds exceed the fines, I could be onto a nice little earner.

Our renewal just came in last week, they wanted £460, up from about £330 ish last year, no reasons.
Got it on a comparison site for £270, theres no loyalty in car insurance. Rip off merchants

yeah, seems like it's a bit of a grey area whether you need to declare mid policy ......

  • When Getting a Quote: Be honest about any points when applying for or renewing insurance.
  • Policy Mid-Term: Check your policy; some require immediate notification if you get points, though renewal is common for minor points, says Compare the Market.
  • Immediate Action: You must tell your insurer immediately if you're banned from driving.
As it's only ever 3 points at a time for minor offences I've never bothered.

Auto renewal is the thing that gets you. They are banking on the majority not being arsed to phone them or shop around.

That's from Breakdown cover to mobile phone contracts.

I always find with car insurance is to get a genuine quote from a couple of sellers that are cheaper than your renewal. Then when you phone to cancel you have genuine quotes to give them from rival companies. They will always match or better thinking you will leave.

Go compare give a free £250 excess cover so I always build up the compulsory and voluntary to = £250.

However, a few years ago I moved home within the same village location and that change of address upped my fee by nearly £150. So, I then did a comparison of the vehicle at my old and my new address, the results were remarkable, every site was showing at least £110 increase at my new home compared to my former a few streets away in the same village. I queried why that would be, the answer was you are a bigger risk at your new home 🤷🏻
