Carrick: ‘We’re looking to improve, but if we can’t, we’re fine’

Injuries allowing, I only think we need a midfielder anyway.

A centre-back if Clarke is as crocked as some people keep rumouring, but we'd manage with a bit of luck.

I’m happy to go with what we’ve got if we can’t get what we’ve identified we need.

Imagine how complex it must be for a club to sensibly recruit. Weighing everything up. Financial commitment, disrupting the squad, etc..

It’s got to be right. Buy smart and well or don’t at all.

Good position to be in. I'm sure we have a number of good bids on the table.

But the message is we're not desperate, we're not going to be held to ransom.

Fair chance a few clubs were banking on that being the case and that by waiting till the last minute they'd get a bit more out of us.

Reasonable chance one or two might cave in at the death. Not a massive problem if they don't.

It’s better than him saying “we’re really short in certain positions, we desperately need another MF and an option up front” …. So please have us over a barrel while we negotiate with the club, the greedy agent etc.

I'm not overly concerned. That said we need the likes of Clarke fit.

I'd say a CM is a priority. We have more than enough options up top. Although very much dependent on Hoppe and Muniz situation. I mean neither play so hardly a 'loss'. Yet numbers wise an issue.

I doubt he'd say if we had 3 signings in the bag. I expect one or two. Yet nothing 'spectacular'. Archer is a terrific signing at this level and will have cost a few quid. The lad from Rotherham and maybe a young prem CB on loan.

Sounds like Archer’s going to be our only business this window to me. Hopefully Carrick can keep them a consistent nuisance and we make a run at the playoffs eh?

Carrick gives absolutely nothing away. Laat week he dropped no clues at all that Lenihan might play at Sunderland, this week reporters tried to fish along different lines of questioning but he still didn't reveal anything at all.
The perfecf poker player. No panic. Totally calm. Players could come, players could even go. Or on the other hand nothing at all might happen.

It's a far better approach. Might not be as exciting for the rumour mill, but it exudes calm confidence and doesn't wind people up by promising things that aren't guaranteed.

Previous managers haven't been able to help themselves talking about potential transfers. Suppose it ramps up excitement, but also disappointment when they don't happen.

Can't see Carrick talking about leaving shirt numbers free! 🤦‍♂️

I like it, Rob.

Wilder was very brash regarding transfers in public... 'the club know what we need', 'it's obvious to everyone where we need to strengthen'.. almost openly letting the world know what we needed and what areas we were crying out for.

Also, by throwing his players under the bus every week, he gave an indication to potential sellers where we were desperate.

Carrick's press conferences aren't going to be wild and action filled, but he's protecting the club, protecting his players and not giving anything away.

Nope. Did you also notice he was quick to point out he had no issue with Zack Steffen. It is the kind of calm resolve that saw us turn a big defeat at Burnley into a blip. Great to repeat that at home to Watford.

Yep. Players won't be afraid to make mistakes under him, all about playing with freedom and enjoying it (as he has stressed a few times). If you lose one, you move onto the next. No team wins every match.

Obviously not afraid to drop players if they're off form, but I can't imagine he'll be ranting and raving at them. Pretty sure it'll be a grown up discussion about why they're dropped and what they need to do to get back in the side.

I'm enjoying the calm, I'd much rather we had the bids in for players that we actually want and playing the waiting game for our main targets than be panicking.

Carrick mentioned that there could end up being names brought up you didn't expect and plans can change.
I'm confident regardless of who we go in for, the Carrick plan and the way he sells the club will attract those players.

Barlaser wants to be here, if he doesn't end up coming then fine, we know Carrick is patient and come the summer he'll be holding the shirt up
