Cheltenham festival, high CV

There’s no doubt it should not have gone ahead but the people there will have been from all over the uk and Ireland

but...but...but they said it was an evidence based approach, following the science, not really significant, not going for herd immunity.

when the boat(s)/ planes landed back in Ireland the taxi drivers refused to take punters who had been at Cheltenham.

Cheltenham is a global event - its on the list - of places to be at and be seen - there was punters and horse people from austrailia, south America, japan, middles east, all of Europe and USA.

and the Liverpool / Madrid game (3,000 Spanish fans over 2/3 nights - not just the 120 mins in the ground) - and they were 2/3 weeks ahead of the UK with the virus - that's criminal to have allowed that..

Agree with FC for the 1st time ever. Literally people from all over the UK and Ireland. Not sure the local population would have even been in their in huge numbers. Middlesbrough is one of the worst in the country per head and worse than London boroughs and its nowhere near Cheltenham. We have over 200 deaths and the whole of Gloucestershire has 147. Don't see the evidence that if Cheltenham didn't go ahead it would be any lower. All that article has done is compare post codes. Its like comparing TS10 and TS11 and then blaming something in Redcar for the higher rate.

It should have gone ahead behind closed doors, I think that had it not been Cheltenham and an ordinary meeting they would have switched to a closed door policy earlier, whilst it’s a massive event it hasn’t got the global reach of say Royal Ascot I would estimate that British and Irish race goers would make up 95% of those in attendance.

i would imagine theres a high proportion of locals working temporary in the hospitality, stewarding, parking, local hotels BnBs , taxis etc

Having lived in Cheltenham for 10 years - you cannot move in Cheltenham that week, pubs, restaurants etc booked solid. so not just people at racecourse. It does seem to be all British Isles people though, not many non Irish or non Brits in my experience.

And they all come from the GL52 postcode?

If there is a huge event in Middlesbrough would the working locals all be TS1, opposed to any other TS postcode. Local workers to Cheltenham would come from across a range of GL post codes.

So what's your explanation then Coops?

True people will have come from all corners of the UK and Ireland surely the relevant matter is how that influx of people spread the virus to people in the post code where the event took place and how it compared to similar post codes, if it’s significantly higher then there looks to be correlation between then it appears that a mistake was made in allowing the event to go ahead with a crowd in attendance.

Having also lived in Cheltenham for over 10 years, I can confirm this. The only way people living in Cheltenham aren't going to mix with racegoers is if they stay indoors for the duration of the event.

To be fair, even the Deputy Chief Medical Officer described the potential links between the Cheltenham Festival and the Liverpool-Atletico game with local spikes in the virus as “a very interesting hypothesis”. That’s hardly dismissing it out of hand is it?

As Jam says, the festival is a huge focus of local employment, both at the racecourse itself and all of the bars, hotels and restaurants in the surrounding area.

Cheltenham is in general an affluent area which tend to have lower figures so the stats for Cheltenham do make grim reading and cannot be a coincidence.

'a very interesting hypothesis' you don't say Sherlock. Is that the one who said we need a more adult conversation about PPE and we were an international example of preparedness?
