Chris Wilder - Are we missing a trick?

Are we missing a trick not going for Chris Wilder this summer?

Bloody good manager despite this season, achieved wonders at the Blades.

Also out of work, so fits our self-imposed rule of not poaching managers.

Or has Warnock shown enough on the pitch and in the transfer market to be worth the one year gamble?

He will be a good choice for anyone outside the premier league so would be silly of us to say it’s a bad idea. He plays some good stuff too. Think he would get a lot out of the likes of Tav and McNair too and they would suit his favoured system. He won’t be out of work long, that’s for sure.

Chris Wilder is an excellent manager and would be a good fit. However it won’t happen, plans are in place for the next season. Gibson will not be that ruthless and if my hunch is right Warnocks successor in 2022/23 is already at the club.

I sincerely hope not. Sick of going down the internal route. Blackwell or Jepson would be a shocking choice. Steve Agnew levels of bad.

Then what after that 1 year is up it’s a very limited vision. I’d say cut ties or and get wilder or Jimmy.

This seasons failure has been a stark as his previous success and that must raise some questions, regarding how they came up so short after impressing so much last season.

It will be intersting to see how he does at his next club - can he replicate his success at Sheff Utd?

He'd be a great choice, but Warnock deserves one more season after he saved the club from certain relegation to League One.
It’s a fair point but got me thinking maybe that’s why we’ve been on a downward spiral as we’re nowhere near ruthless enough as a club.

As an aside, how did we end up with Karanka? I seem to remember he could've gone to Palace. So was he and his agent touting him round England and we took the bait? I assume we weren't scouring La Liga's coaching set ups for our next manager at the time?

From an excellent appointment in Karanka to sacking him to replace him with Steve Agnew. Just mental. Still ***** me off to this day.

There would be no justification for giving someone like Blackwell the job. I would be devastated if that were to happen.

Wilder would be a good choice - he did a good job at Sheff United overall with two promotions and one relegation. He also did well at Northampton before that. SU were stupid not to give him another chance to bounce straight back. I am willing to give Neil Warnock a shot, but he may only have one year left in him. He has got his bearings now and the AK/Monk/Pulis players he did not want and he perceived as poor value have gone or about to go.

I can see Wilder going for a job at Palace this summer and WBA if Big Sam leaves - Budget at those clubs will be much bigger than the Boro. There are also the teams that fail in the Championship playoffs that may want a fresh change.

Totally agree Warnock deserves another season but seems he’s had it after that which is an issue which goes back to cold hard planning
Would wilder be a better bet given he could miss out on him just because we /Gibbo feels obligated to give him another year
I like Warnock a lot but his age and noises he makes about retirement leaves me nervous when wilder is available who I rate very highly
Difficult choices as in life

I’ve nothing against warnock but this one last season thing worries me as why would anyone come not knowing what happens next season. It’s the epitome of short term.

so if we could get a more solid foundation then why not

My thoughts exactly.

This summer feels like our chance for a little squad rebuild with some big earners off the books and key positions (GK, strikers) needing filling. Finally a clean slate after the Monk / Pulis players have gone.

Warnock deserve the chance to put his own squad together and have a real crack. His record is as good as it gets for this league. I’m nervous that his signings last year were mostly not very good. It also makes me nervous that it’s likely his last year.

If you could sign a team on one year contracts that would be fine. But in the real world I’m worried the next manager will come in with the same situation the last few had - lots of players they don’t want on 3-4 year deals, no money to play with.

In terms of Blackwell & Jepson taking over, I can’t think of any examples where recruiting the assistant has worked. A new manager is supposed to bring fresh ideas and energy. Usually when teams bring in the assistant, it’s the same as the last regime but without the leader, who is the best one - can’t think of a time players have ever responded well to it.
