Club Anthem

I was listening to a podcast recently where someone said Stampy, in training, was simply unplayable. A "Monday to Friday" footballer they called him. Can't remember who it was, might have been Hignett or Fleming.
Remember when Stampy spent a fair bit of time during a game at Old Trafford just wandering about in midfield with the ball before making his pass to Juninho?

I think it was either Robson or Viv Anderson who remarked afterwards just how good a player Stamp had to be to do that against a team of Man U’s quality at the time.

Yeah. I think the problem with Stampy, much like Pollock, was that when he broke into the first team he looked skilful and had flair, Stampy scored a great solo run in the win over City when Juninho scored his first goal, then another good strike against Arsenal a few weeks later.

But both players ended up a bit on the tubby side as they hit their mid-20s and were used in a different way to their late teen selves. Maybe wouldn’t happen in the modern game. It somehow felt like neither fulfilled their potential but I’m sure both players would say they had decent careers, and Stampy could definitely play.

It’s weird how he has become a sort of “icon” in the eyes of Boro fans, as a Teessider synonymous with Teesside grit etc. I guess the line in the Let’s Dance song, which was there for that very purpose (almost as a veiled attack on our foreign mercenaries), helped create that profile.

Agree with the earlier comment about Steel River. The Brighton match was the only time I've thought a proper anthem/song like that could catch on, it really got people going in that match. It is perfect, the first line - "I was born and raised on steel river"

I've noticed the club do play it but people haven't embraced like they did against Brighton.

Power game is very uplifting ... an Anthem? ... maybe not ... does an anthem need lyrics? For the Boro it should be a local based tune/lyrics.... Maybe a Vin Garbutt composition could be sorced?

I keep mentioning Z-cars but it has no words and is totally synonymous with Everton. In hindsight we maybe should have kept Power Game, it may have become more synonymous with us throughout the country in the PL era, but I think that’s more Pig Bag now and in fairness it was very popular for the first few years such that it stuck.

Never saw that song in that light but you could be right,,I thought it just contrasted the home grown Stampy with the exotic Brazillian import Juninho, I bet Stampy’s upbringing in Berwick Hills was easier than the streets of Sau Paulo…!

I would say Sunderland's is more 'Wise men say'. We definitely need one. It sounded incredible when Sheff Utd fans sang the chip butty song just before kick off at Bramall Lane this season. It should be pigbag as we run out (though I would prefer power game myself) then into the anthem. I love We Shall Overcome - to say its a losers song is just daft! We sang it plenty of times when winning over the years but this myth of us losing after singing it was exactly that, a myth!
It's our song.pigbag is embarrassing. I stand with arms folded as I always have .but give a massive comeonnnnnn when the players run towards the North stand.
Pigbag turns into a Reading instead of an established famous Old club imo

Power game is good , pigbag is ours
Steel river is ours
Mix it up by adding
Take me home country roads
To the place I belong
To the Boro ,
By the river
Take me home
Country Roads
And
Spirit in the sky

Going on up to the Boro in the sky
That’s where I wanna go when I die
When I die and they lay me to rest
Wanna go to the place that’s the best
Then
We shall overcome
And
Gonna see the Boro win again
Down by the Riverside
Down by the Riverside
Down by the Riverside
Gonna see the Boro win again
Down by the Riverside
Repeat and clap

Due to age I only really got to Ayresome Park a few times, so I enjoy Power game. Goes great with the shots of Ayresome on the big screen during the video montage.

Also enjoy Steel River, and I seem to remember it getting a good run or games before stopping?

The difficulty is there’s not really anything for anybody to ‘join in’ with in either of them, so it’s hard to claim it as our own when there’s not much to sing along to. They give the odd goosebumps for big games but that’s when you stand and take it in as the songs play rather than being involved with it and belting out a song like Liverpool/Stoke etc…

I first heard this song on a Youtube documentary about FC St Pauli. It's raucous, uplifting, clappy, singable, has the right lyrics for a football anthem and even contains the words YNWA.

Young man there's no need to feel down
I said young man get yourself to the ground
I said young man 'cause your in the right town
There's no need to be unhappy
Young man there's a place you can go
I said young man when you're down with your woes
You can go there and I'm sure you will find
Many ways to have a good time.
It's fun to shout for the B..O..R..O
It's fun to shout for the B..O..R..O
They have everything for their fans to enjoy.
You can hang out with all the boys.
B..O..R..O lets all sing for the B..O..R..O
B..O..R..O lets all sing for the B..O..R..O

(Ok, I admit, I am bored listening to the Mackem love in)

Pigbag and perfecto allstarz are embarrassing - like someone dug out a hitz of the nineteeez cd at a car boot.

Fly me to the moon has no connection to the club beyond a throwaway quote 40 years ago that was about a player who now manages sunlun not about the club.

You cant just attribute a song to the club it has to happen organically. The YNWA type songs can be sang in both victory and defeat thats a big part of why theyve stuck over the years - i dont personally like it but it works at anfield. Speaking if which its fantastic when liverpool are at home and they have live music i. The pre match pubs and so many songs devoted to the teams many exploits. Boro might be best served with summat like that rather than adopt some random song with zero clib connection
