Could the repeal of “roe v wade” be trumps real legacy

And people wondered why the Americans made such a big issue of RBG dieing.

She was the buffer the cork in the bottle between law and reason.
 
His real legacy is the massive damage to a system of democracy, the large scale abandonment of political ideology in favour of a personality cult and the polarisation of a country to an extreme level that there in future could be large scale civil unrest.
 
And the other part of his "legacy" (in terms of SCOTUS decisions) will be the decision yesterday, which basically establishes the right for people in the US to carry guns wherever and whenever they want, without a permit and without having to show any reason for it.

I think there is strong possibility of the USA having another civil war within the next 100 years. You have such ideologically opposed states. The red v blue gap is getting wider and wider and over time people will move to red or blue states depending on their own views.

This will polarise things further until there won't be anything red & blue have in common.
 
Absolutely horrific news. Imagine waking this morning in a country where your rights had been eroded so easily, effectively and by so few. The backlash to this should (rightly) be swift and direct with a long-lasting impact.

The final desperate act of the old vestiges of power trying to cling on.
 
And to think the Americans spent billions of dollars to wage wars on religious fundamentalist zealots who were all armed and treated women and minorities like 2nd and 3rd class citizens to keep them out of the country.
Yeah, they tut and sneers as they watch taliban forces fire AK47 up into the air.. an incredible lack of self awareness.

They strut as they crow the words Democracy, Liberty and Justice and cheer as the guy who came 2nd in a two horse race, tears of joy as he takes office and appoints supreme court judges to take away fundamental constitutional rights which they have enjoyed for 50 years.

Kids are slain by police in the streets, slaughtered at school, murders are revered as national heroes. ‘WE THE PEOPLE’ the opening gambit to their constitution reduced to white noise.

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution..

Perhaps a highlighter pen would be more appropriate rather than holding the seemingly set in stone amendments above all else.

This is done now and it is going to be an almighty fight over a number of years to reverse it.
My only hope is that this is his last legacy and that he doesn't even get on the ticket for 2024. If he does, and wins, what will the world look like in 2028?


And would he go quietly then. Yes I do know about the two terms.
 
The other thing to bear in mind is that the legal arguments they used to underpin the overturning of Roe vs Wade could also be used to overturn other rights.

And this is not just idle speculation, because Justice Thomas, in his part of the ruling, made specific reference to this, and stated that these rights should now be looked at, as follows:

"In future cases, we should reconsider all of this Court's substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell," Thomas wrote.

The three cases he refers to there, cover the rights to contraception, male to male sexual intimacy and same-sex marriage.
 
It'll do one of two things. It'll either send the US down a right-wing evangelical hellhole where rights are eroded by a court put in place by a minority of white men. The alternative is that it'll see the modernisation of the US political system and put an end to the filibuster, the electoral college and ultimately take control of the GOP back from the right-wing nutjobs who have replaced the somewhat less odious conservative Republicans.

USA founded by religious zealots of their day & it's dragging them down still..
The founding fathers were less religious nutcases than these lot now. They ensured separation of church and state and freedom of religious beliefs.

Where this is headed who knows. But The Handmaid's Tale doesn't seem so crazy does it.
