Are we expecting an snnouncement of further restrictions later this week do you think, with the first Omicron hospitalisations starting to materialise and the massive wave of infections predicted in January, they really are in a damned if they do, dammed if they don’t scenario.
 
Has Neil Ferguson got anything right yet? The government and media are whipping up fear and hysteria. Not denying that Covid exists and people need to be careful and be vaccinated if they choose to be, but there is literally nothing more we can do. Further restrictions will just cause more problems. If only the opposition had the balls to go against the government…

And no Ferguson hasn't got anything right yet people blindly continue to listen to him and his colleagues.

Omicron has been dominant in South Africa these past 4-5 weeks.

They don't have many of those in South Africa. In the last data I saw (Friday) they do have people who test positive for Omicron, but 90% of those were at the hospital for some other condition and happened to test positive - everyone is tested on entry to the hospital in question.

There were 260 cases of Omicron in the UK in the last VOC technical briefing dated 10 December 2021. In South Africa Omicron has an R value of 2.5. Which means cases double every 2 or 3 days, masks, lockdowns or otherwise. Within a month Omicron will be the predominant variant and the Delta variant - the one causing deaths in vaccinated and unvaccinated - will be suppressed by Omicron, as is currently happening in South Africa.

It took only one month for Omicron to go from a handful of cases to being 75% of all cases in South Africa. Hospitalisations and deaths have not increased there to date. It's still relatively early but the picture should be clearer in a week or two.

Ferguson has got quite a lot right. Just most people don’t understand that because they’ve never read the scientific papers relating to the modelling. The press run with sensational headlines which often are misleading and the articles lack details.
 
Problem with SA is their younger population, we dont yet know what will happen here. Only definite is that Omnicron will spread like wildfire. Thing is we dont now how serious it will be in the old and unvaccinated. If it is mild then sure no problem but if not then we will be in real trouble. Things will become clearer over the next week

SA are also in Summer which helps.

we’ve just gone from covid level 3 to 4 too. I wonder if more data is emerging.
 
If he had the guts he could go for a 10 day circuit breaker but I doubt his own MPs would go for it but maybe the people would if it allows a normal time over christmas itself???

Covid isn't seasonal. We've been told that repeatedly since the early days.

Also the PM statement is pre recorded so it'll more than likely be a booster jab advert.
