Desmond Tutu

Sometimes there comes a man

who doesn’t so much stand out

from the crowd as dance from it,

twinkletoed and sparkling.

Made of sunshine and smiles,

and wisdom and peace,

with a smidgen of silliness

to lighten the day.

Rarer than gold.

Made from stars.

RIP to a great man.

A remarkable man who practised what he preached and wasn't afraid to get his hands dirty. Unlike some of those who pontificate from their pulpits but don't have a clue about the common man, or the real world outside of the church walls. This man stood high above the rest. I recall in the 1980s when the ANC had the savage practise of 'necklacing' putting burnt tyres around people necks. Desmond Tutu fought his way through an incredibly hostile crowd intent on burning the man alive to physically remove the tyre. That image has always remained with me. RIP.

I remember he paid a visit to St Albans Cathedral a few years back drawing a big crowd and not disappointing them by walking out to greet them. Indeed a great man.

I can remember in the 70s African politics seemed to be a constant on the news. Names like Kenneth Kaunda, Joshua Nkomo, Bishop Abel Muzorewa, Julius Nyere etc
