After the news that Dimi has joined the coaching staff at Hartlepool United the club would like to put on record its thanks to Dimi for his service to date with Thornaby FC.

Dimi is in discussions with the Management Team as regards his continued involvement as a player as and when available. We will keep everyone updated with this situation.

Progression is the aim for all involved in football and Dimi’s return to the professional ranks is testament to the qualities he has shown in his time with us.

Good luck in your new role Dimi Konstantopoulos 🧤

I watched him the other night - a 5-3 away victory for Thornaby at West Allotment Celtic in the Northern League Div 1.

Clearly still in shape - still cant shout properly - and still got beat at the near post as well.

Playing for fun - and obviously really enjoying himself. Good luck to him.

Still got beat at the near post - just like Boro's current keeper on Saturday then.
Happy Birthday Dimi.

My Burnley supporting mate still anguishes over his error in the last minute against QPR so enjoy bringing his name up at any opportunity.

He was the right player at the right time.

Plenty of other keepers had better reflexes, he didn't often pull out wonder saves. His kicking was distinctively average too. In terms of natural ability, it's arguable he was the weakest keeper at the club. But maybe the perfect example of its not necessarily what you've got, it's what you do with it that counts.

The way we played meant the keeper was very well protected. Didn't face many shots in open play. What we needed was an experienced head who wasn't going to take risks, made good decisions and provide a calming influence on the relatively young defence ahead of him.

He was a perfect fit at the time and rightly deserves his cult status.

I don't think he'd necessarily be good enough for us now given the style were trying to play. But he's definitely not massively overrated, his record speaks for itself. He did the job required pretty much perfectly.

About 50 clean sheets over 2 seasons. Would be easily our best keeper now.
I think we all know those clean sheets are resultant of our style of play. He dropped many a clanger even behind that solid defensive system he was paying under. He’d be severely exposed in this side.

Well said Festa. Its absolute rubbish to say he was overrated, let alone EXTREMELY overrated. Was one of the best keepers in the division over those two brilliant seasons yet some still insist on bringing up the odd error, which is bizarre considering there aren't many keepers the world over that don't make mistakes over a season. I remember speaking to Ben Gibson about him a couple of seasons after the prem one, and he said pretty much what you did - the players knew they could rely on him and was a calming influence when needed. Let's be honest, over those two seasons, I bet none of us worried when the team sheets where released and he was number one, in fact, It was probably the position we least worried about.

Now I know there can't be any sentiment in football, and it is definitely me speaking from the heart, but still rankles with me that he wasn't played away to Liverpool that last game of the season!

It’s opinions like this which is why I think he’s extremely over rated. I tried to assess his performances in isolation from the system he played in. The system provided the clean sheets not Dimi. Whenever he was out under any kind of pressure, he made mistakes.

If you want to start looking at clean sheet stats let’s take a look at Darren Randolph’s vastly inferior record because we all know Darren Randolph is infinitely the better keeper of the two.

Yep, that still winds me up as well. He deserved that after the previous two seasons. But that was symptomatic with the way Karanka discarded a lot of the team that got us up and instead divided the dressing room with overpaid rubbish

But you can't really look at it in isolation, any players job is to perform within a system. He did that perfectly. You seem to be suggesting we could've thrown anyone in there and the result would've been the same, which is a bit of a stretch to say the least.

I also strongly disagree he made mistakes under pressure. In fact I think if anything the opposite is true. He was fantastic under pressure. The system often invited it, ball after ball into the box at times. He never flapped and his command of his box in those situations were excellent, you never felt worried unlike the many flappers we've had since. The defensive unit, of which the keeper is a key component in those situations, was brilliant as dealing with it.

When he did make mistakes (which were nowhere near as often as you seem to think) they tended to come out of the blue if anything, when there wasn't much pressure on.
