DIMI

Favourite Boro keeper in my lifetime. Good shotstopper and a proper motivator, loved the fans and area and really got Boro. Should have been first choice in the Prem - biggest mistake Aitor made was signing Valdes and Guzan. Him catching that final ball against Brighton is in my top 3 Boro memories.

But you can't really look at it in isolation, any players job is to perform within a system. He did that perfectly. You seem to be suggesting we could've thrown anyone in there and the result would've been the same, which is a bit of a stretch to say the least.

I also strongly disagree he made mistakes under pressure. In fact I think if anything the opposite is true. He was fantastic under pressure. The system often invited it, ball after ball into the box at times. He never flapped and his command of his box in those situations were excellent, you never felt worried unlike the many flappers we've had since. The defensive unit, of which the keeper is a key component in those situations, was brilliant as dealing with it.

When he did make mistakes (which were nowhere near as often as you seem to think) they tended to come out of the blue if anything, when there wasn't much pressure on.

The goalkeeper position is one of the positions where i think you can view it in isolation. You could throw most goalkeepers into that role and they would've thrived because they would've had very little to do. Again i think you're vastly over rating his ability. There was a reason he never played any higher than the second tier of of English football. No problems with Dimi the bloke. Comes across as a great that got Teesside as you say. He just wouldn't come close to the top 5 keepers i've seen here over the last 30 years or so.

Apart from Mejias and Jason Steele you mean? 😉

Obviously think we'll have to agree to disagree on this, which is fair enough.

Still got beat at the near post - just like Boro's current keeper on Saturday then.
Happy Birthday Dimi.
With a spinning deflection from a few yards away, that came off the post onto him. I don't class that as getting done at your near post, though I can see why some would though.

Funny things do happen in the penalty area - remember Bottletopgate.
