Discussions to take place about domestic cup competitions

"English football chiefs meet this week to discuss scrapping FA Cup replays, entering youth sides for Carabao Cup, and moving the Community Shield to the opening weekend of the PL season or mid-season.

In return, PL clubs would distribute more money to the EFL"

Scrapping replays is something that should have been done ages ago, they're ***** and the only argument for them is that they give extra money to struggling clubs, which shouldn't be a reason for their continued existence.

Would sooner they scrapped the League Cup than allow youth sides in it though.

Couldn’t the League Cup be just that once again? Premier League clubs aren’t in the Football League anyway! Maybe give the winners a play off place?

The charity shield is a waste of time....just donate money to the charities.

I agree about the global friendlies to make money. Clubs jetted off all around the world during the WC break. Yet will be the first to moan when they have 2 away games after Europe or a 1230 kick off (Klopp).

Give a champions league place to the winners of each competition. Problem solved. The big boys would then give them the respect they deserve and it would also open the CL up to more than just money bags teams.
I'm all for this. I think it should be Top 2 qualify, Winners of the cups. Runners up get Europa League. 3rd and 4th get conference.
Let's see how the big boys treat the competitions then

UEFA would never give the League Cup a Champions League spot.

They want England to scrap it.

Any attempt to remove or dilute any of the 92 from it, and I'd back it being scrapped.

May as well just play in the Papa John's Trophy if you're going remove the best sides from it, it would become a pointless competition.

You would not say that about replays if you had been going for these games. You earn the right to get a replay dont take it away from the smaller clubs because the bigger clubs have other fish to fry.

Let those half a dozen teams who are in Europe not enter. They would not be missed in the least. Not sure what the Beeb would put on if Man U didn't enter the cup.

Like it was mentioned above let it be a passage to Europe for the winners.

The EFL clubs have always been easily divided and ruled and that's why they are now begging for scraps from the table.

Scrap extra time & go straight to pens, & if it goes to sudden death then a team with player sent off is counted as missed..

If all 11 score, team with least yellows in the game wins.. no / even yellows.. most fouls loses..

Exactly. It's all about money. Give them a week off and they will fill it with a money-spinning friendly somewhere.

I hate that the League Cup has been so devalued. I can understand the big clubs doing it in a way. It isn't a priority for them because they have realistic chances of winning several other competitions but it absolutely baffles me that other teams don't take it seriously. Teams like Spurs, Newcastle, Everton, Villa, West Ham and all those other established PL teams with no chance of winning the league have a genuinely good chance of winning a trophy. They have all won so little that I can't believe they pass up the opportunity to win something every season by playing their kids. They should focus on the League Cup instead of the FA Cup because they have more chance of winning it because a draw against one of the big teams means playing their reserve team.

I don't find it hard to believe at all. You've got fans on this messageboard every single year saying play the kids in the cups. This from a team who have no history in the league whatsoever, but in recent years have been an outstanding cup team.

We're not at the same level as those teams through. As it stands currently, with Boro as a better than average Championship team, we have no realistic chance of winning the League Cup. The reserve teams of top six clubs are more likely to win it, as are half of the Prem teams (if they decide to give it a real go).

My policy for the League Cup, as long as we're a Champ team, is rest and rotate for the first few rounds. If we find that we somehow make it through to the quarter finals, and are then four games from success, then I'd start to take it seriously. Otherwise we can't prioritise a cup that we're 99% unlikely to win over focussing on getting promoted, which we absolutely need to do at some point over the next few years to keep the club financially secure. Its not romantic/sporting glory but it's the fact of life.

Obviously when we were a Prem club in the 00's, or if we make it back there in near future, then that belief would change and I'd give League Cup full respect and focus. But as it is today it just can't be a priority for a club like ours v a draining 46 game season with a £150m pot at the end.
