Do we need a star name

I think this has always helped us with recruitment as no doubt Robbo pulled in players that we’d struggle to get normally so would you like to see a kompany lampard style appointment???

If so would someone like Rooney be worth a go.

I see Michael carrick linked that would fit this mould and it’s a path that has worked for us in the path. Top ex player a good respected name knows the area and worked at high level coaching at Man U.

It’s not the pull, it’s the targeting! Liam Rosenior or Joey Barton to bring in some league one gems?

Obviously a risk but probably one worth taking. I would get behind it if that was the way we went.

I don't think it works anymore.

Players have much longer tenures. If a player signs for a manager now, he knows that he'll be lucky to be working with him for 6 months, and he'll still have a 3.5 year contract once the manager has gone.

It worked in the Robbo era, but that was over quarter of a century ago: look how average manager tenures have fallen since then.

It won't make any difference.
We've had a succession of "names" in the game and we've failed to get promoted with them all.
We simply can't get our recruitment right and make sure we address all the weak areas at the same time.

Mentioned this the other day but news that carrick is now in the frame I’d thought I’d raise this again.

As we do seem to do better with a recognised name or some with a history at top clubs at the helm.

We do better with an increase of contacts.. more info on cheaper players, more chance of loan players etc etc

Strachan could have done well for us if he wasn’t a complete duck egg of a manager and pulled out rejects and duffers from the SPL - we had that extra route into an untapped market. (Mark Proctor would have served us better the season before mind)

It’s information we lack, players, coaching the lot. We couldn’t build it from within with Woodgate.. even with Wilder it wasn’t happening. We need to expand our horizon’s!

For players the ROI market has been showing some interesting players, South East London has long been a hotbed got talent now.. tie that in with some shrewd free agents and loan signings and we’d be off to a winner!

Carrick & Rosenoir is the dream ticket for me at the moment.

Robbo could also pay hugely inflated wages to attract top talent.

That’s true but with out Robbo we don’t get Juno or Rav despite the wages same got merson no way he leaves Arsenal for us without Robbo.
We've discussed this to death before zorro, I am not as convinced of that as you. Merson has been asked on countless podcasts in recent times why he came to Boro and never once has he said "Robbo".

It’s clear money was a factor for merson but I think Robbo tipped the balance.

Look at this from beck

“I had lots of possibilities that summer, I could have signed for 25 to 30 different clubs in Europe.

“I chose Middlesbrough because I’d always liked the Premier League and Bryan Robson had always been my hero and idol. So when I could have him as my coach I thought that was something really interesting for me to do so I decided to sign for Middlesbrough.”

Ok, but that's Beck. Those other 25-30 clubs probably weren't that much above our level. Beck was relatively highly rated before we got him but make no mistake, if one of the top Italian clubs had come in for him he was going there regardless of Robbo.

The likes of Ravanelli could have easily gone to bigger clubs than Boro, but we increased his wages from £7k to £42k a week, for a player who didn't start every week at Juventus and had only started three or four times for Italy. He couldn't believe his luck, but of course some players want to sell the idea to fans that they're not just interested in money. Some of them aren't, but Ravanelli and Merson certainly were!
