Drink Driving

Yup - one of the most shameful things I have done.
Quite a few times until I was around 25

I reckon you went straight when you changed your username from that Spurs fella, Gilzean was it?

That's like the indefinite lockdown discussion. There are tolerances in everything. If we made every decision on whether it might kill one person or not then we'd ban stairs.
My issue is that as mentioned above, peoples tolerance and recovery varies so much. Is it really such a pain to get a taxi - or wait for it, not drink??
It's the law that is stupid. That is the point of the discussion.
The law is actually based on religious beliefs but is tolerant of westerners who want to drink - It's just that they draw the line at drinking AND driving

But like explained above, it is not necessary and it is overdoing it. We have a limit which I assume is well within the tolerance for safe driving. Is it really sensible to say that if you have a few drinks on an evening then you can't drive until midday the next day? People not being able to get to work when they are perfectly safe to do so? We all agree that drink driving is bad but imprisoning people for safe levels of alcohol is mental. They aren't drawing the line at drinking and driving, they are drawing the line at drinking and then not driving for 12 hours. Obviously it is based on religious beliefs and not science which is why it is draconianly stupid.

We all make mistakes, mate. The important thing is to learn from them.

I’ve been prosecuted for it around 25/30 years ago, bank holiday weekend had been on drink Friday ,Saturday ,Sunday , on the Sunday evening my then partner drove down to meet me at 7pm , fast forward to a blazing row between us , I took the car keys off her , and jumped in the car which was parked a street away , set off , forgot to put my glasses on , took eyes off road to look for them and drove straight into a parked car !!
The car I hit was on a hill and rolled into the car in front and damaged that too , from setting off I had travelled less than 200 metres at a guess and was doing less than 30 , nobody hurt thankfully but I cut my knee open and was momentarily knocked out when my head smashed the windscreen .
Went to court and received a years ban and £900 fine , never done it since then , hardly drink now tbh , the shame I felt and realisation of what could have happened had a profound effect on me , one thing I was surprised by though , considering the amount I had drank that weekend , my readings were far less than I expected , well under twice the limit ! Which certainly shows everybody,s body is different with alcohol .
And before anyone jumps on to slate what I’ve written , I was young ,daft as a brush , Drink driving is for idiots and ruins lives .

I remember my driving instructor insisted a did a driving lesson the morning after a night out. I had already booked the lesson, and last minute decided to go out into town on the night before. I’d text him about 7pm saying I don’t think I’ll be able to do the lesson, sorry for messing you around etc etc.

He turned up at my house in the morning and somehow got me into the car and it was the worst 2 hours of my life (at the time, I was only young). I’m not sure if he was trying to teach me a lesson or was just that annoyed about me messing him around last minute.

Been driving 8 years and not once has it came across my mind to get in the car after drinking. In hindsight though, I probably should have changed instructors 😬

Thanks to a lot of you for your honesty and for not seeing the usual pile on on this type of thread.
So I’m in the Canaries where this is not uncommon, next door neighbour cleared someone out on a pushbike and he was drunk, second offence too - he got a 700 euro fine and eight month ban. Doesn’t exactly act as a deterrent does it. Have I done it? Probably here and maybe ‘next day’ driving in the uk. Would i now, no I am lucky I can afford taxis, actually im lucky I can afford to go out occasionally, so no it’s not going to happen.

No, but it is manslaughter.
Death by Dangerous Driving & Causing death by careless driving when under the influence both have the same max sentencing as Unlawful Act Manslaughter, they all have a max sentence of life imprisonment (the driving offences also have a minimum disqualification of 5 years with compulsory extended re-test) but people convicted of them are rarely charged to the same levels as those that are convicted of manslaughter.

The driving offences were brought in as juries of drivers wouldn't convict a fellow driver of manslaughter, it was apparent that to convict juries thought manslaughter was a serious offence by someone they could 'other' while killing someone while driving was an "accident" that could happen to any one of us.

It appears the judges are still of that opinion.
