East London

Just spent the weekend down here mostly around Whitechapel up to London Fields.
Thought it was a bit of a revelation
The place is really vibrant with lots to see and do.
Particularly enjoyed Broadway Market

And
Queuing for over 40 minutes for a felafel flat bread sandwich at Pockets in Netil Market.
It was worth it

Reminded me of this song from the recent past

Go to Camden Market on a Sunday too. Seems to be 100 of thousands crammed into a small space.

When media people say the London economy is struggling they are talking cr** - its seems fashionable to talk it down in the last few years.

When I worked in the City I’d often take a couple of hours over lunch to walk up East and back. Refreshingly different from the day job, even though most people thought I was the Old Bill - no one else was wearing a suit!

I was in the Chapel Market area of Islington onThursday and Friday, had a good natter with a few of the old locals, they're struggling with the change in culture over the last couple of decades. I noticed a lot has changed since we left just under a decade back too.

The portrayal of life being rosy for the baby boomers didn't come across but the place was busy with what they described as 'blow ins', it certainly wasn't struggling.

I built the Excel Exhibition centre ( ok I had a bit of help) so spent a year in docklands, canary ware and the old east end. Farrkin larved it me owld China.

Night before Charlie Kray’s funeral we were all ‘told’ we wouldn’t be welcome out the next night and to stay in our hotels even though the area had completely changed since those days.

We had a walk down Bermondsey too - it was lovely

First time we have been to London and not hit the West End - we didn’t miss it

some great walks down the river lea, combining weird "rural" & industrial landscapes

If you haven't seen it then I'd recommend you check out What Have You Done Today Mervyn Day? which is a film made by Saint Etienne (yes the band) from 2005 which chronicles the Lower Lea valley, which has obviously changed beyond all recognition now the Olympic Park and surrounding areas has sprung up.

This is the link to the wider London Trilogy when it was released on DVD, and is the only reason I still own a DVD player (it wasn't available on the BFI website at the time)

Yeah so many better places to go to be honest. You could spend a weekend in tons of places on their own. Soho is still great though

It is. but it's changed beyond recognition even since I started going in the very late 90's / early 2000's. Still some good pubs like The French, The Blue Posts and The Coach & Horses, and traditional places evoking the Soho of old, places like Ronnie's and Bar Italia, but it's so gentrified now. There's barely any record shops on Berwick Street, The Endurance has closed down and become a Duck & Rice and even the "models" and peep shows seem to have largely drifted away.

It's still fun, but as expected in a rapidly changing city like London it's not the Soho I used to know (whether that's a good thing or bad thing is irrelevant).

Me and the wife go into london about 4 times a year for a walk round. Don't plan where we are going.

One trip it will be central london, the next time it might be a walk round spitalfields market and some street food.

She loves camden market, I can take it or leave it, but it is very popular.

We stumbled on a fantastic Vegan cafe near Spitalfields
'Dauns' - just opposite Unity Diner (another Vegan place)

But - if you are into it go to Alter Vegan restaurant next time you are there.
The chef at the cafe recommended it.
Sensational food and pretty reasonable price

Love Bar Italia, does it ever close? Bit of a stroll, but Sam’s Bar is still pretty authentic.
