43p

43p a day for public service broadcasting, giving artists and producers freedom to create things without the need to pander to 'the market'. Uncovering massive talent and giving opportunities to lesser voices. Live sport without adverts.

A madness to think the license fee is a bad idea.
Why should it be mandatory to pay over a subscription service?

I couldn't care less how much they pay that lot. If they're popular and they get viewing figures then that's just their market value. Not my cup of tea but some people like that kind of thing. I just have a problem with the pro Tory bias. I don't want to have to pay for L.K to be reading Tory press releases out to me without any attempt at trying to hold those w@nkers to account. That's just being shat upon twice. And I'm not a fan of being shat upon. I'm old fashioned that way.

Why should families, pensioners and the less well off pay those salaries?
If those individuals are that good - people will pay a subscription and tune in (y)

And Doctor Who is sh*te these days. Curse you Chris Chin Balls. Bloke can't write for toffee. Worzel Gummidge is decent though. And Bob and Paul's fishing show is great. So it isn't all bad.

The worse thing isn't even having to pay for BBC content, it's being forced to pay so I can watch other live TV even if I never watch BBC.

Most of the good stuff on BBC is made by a 3rd party production company so if BBC didn't exist then that programmes would just go somewhere else.

They make some good stuff that is definitely pay for but there is way too much awful stuff and they pay far too much for all their chums to be kept permanently on screen.

Interesting, the Tories have increased control of the BBC over the last ten years to silence the perceived bias. Now they have started the clock ticking on the sale. The leverage has been removed and the BBC is almost incentivised to favour the opposition. I'm calling that more evidence of Dorries' stupidity. Perhaps given that the date is so far in the future and the timing of the announcement, it is just another dead cat to distract from the corruption of this Government and just part of "Operation Save Big Dog"?

It's possible to have public service broadcasting (PBS) without funding it via a license fee. The license fee made quite a bit of sense in broadcasting's formative years; it's become an anachronism in an age of almost universal TV ownership. Personally, I'd prefer to fund it out of general taxation as the license fee falls unduly on the law-abiding.

I wouldn't argue against that model, but you can guarantee that's not something this government will do.

This should be another big error by the Tories. Already on the ropes, the two institutions the public love most, the NHS and the BBC, are being handed to Labour as central rallying issues they can defend.

A criticism of Labour has been that more is required than just not being the Tories, that they also need a couple of big identifiable things they stand for.

We stand for the BBC, we stand for the NHS are pretty simple and popular ideas for most to get behind.

Turn this in to defend and improve. Turn it into protect. Link it to tackling corruption. Link it to defending the independence of the judiciary. Add electoral reform, Labour could be seen as centrist and radical at the same time.

There really are some stupid, selfish muppets on this thread.
As a member of admin, you ought to be able to discuss/debate without chucking insults.

Are you suggesting that it's unreasonable or selfish for people to not wish to pay for a television service that they don't use?

As someone else mentioned, you have to have to pay the license fee just to 'legally' watch other channels (live) that you subscribe to.

How much would we be willing to pay for it. I have Netflix that I watch occasionally. For that pleasure I pay the same as I do to BBC. But I do not get any Radio, current affairs, sport, websites. learning apps, catch up. BBC Sounds
The BBC is a bargain

It is a bargain, though those that have grown up with the internet & possibly think everything is free & adverts are just something you work to block or live with - do not see why they should pay for it as they get it for free now... QED..

ALL the printed press & all other TV & news companies will be praying it goes subscription... per house or per person...
