England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 v Uruguay 🇺🇾 - 7:45pm ITV1

That was like watching a game at the African cup of Nations. Officials doing what they liked and no doubt walking off to collect a big brown envelope stuffed full of dodgy cash.

Awful game and England were poor but agree with those saying Uruguay were dirty. In a competitive game they would have had at least half the team on a yellow, as it’s a friendly it meant they just got away with a lot. Really strange and poor officiating.

I find it sad that loads don't give a ***** about watching England any more apart from Euros and World Cup. And that's not a dig at anyone because I am one of them people. I can't explain it myself....maybe someone else can.

I can't offer an answer, because it puzzles me also. Especially when compared to the other two big outdoor team sports - Rugby and Cricket, where internationals create far more interest and support than at club/county level.

You watched it, the rest of us watched it. So we do watch England when it's not a competition because we're football fans.

Aside from the yellow carry on I didn't mind the ref. He didn't pander to the English diving and pretending to be hurt nonsense.

It’s because the Euros and World Cup are the only time they play where it’s an actual contest with something on the line. Outside of them its either a pointless friendly or watching them cruise against European cannon fodder in a qualifier.

It would be like only getting to watch Boro once every two years competitively against other championship teams or premier league teams. Then the rest of the time watching us play against league 1 to conference north sides.

I don’t think it’s just because they are non-competition matches. I think it’s that there are too many of them in that category. Back in the day, occasional friendly matches, particularly against decent opposition, still felt like they mattered. I remember a Germany game not long after Italia 90 that certainly fell in that category.

And someone made the comparison with rugby and cricket where internationals matter more. Even though large numbers of those aren’t in a competition. Okay, I know they are trying to contrive something for the autumn rugby series going forwards, and there has been something equally nonsensical for test cricket for about six years. But prior to that, not a single cricket test match was part of a formal competition (except in 1912) and nor were most rugby internationals and they still mattered.

What has certainly changed since I first started watching football, even at club level, is that individual matches don’t seem to matter anymore. We used to enjoy them as a thing in their own right. The individual result could stand alone. But such is the obsession now with the Premier League, whether it’s getting to it, or staying in it, that this isn’t true anymore. Thats why the cups have declined too. And friendly internationals are the ultimate one off match.

it was garbage game, the reason they are being played though is that other nations are going through the qualification process for the WC, back in the day - that would have been England playing Poland, Sweden or Belgium probably trying to qualify - with Scotland already qualified..

TBH I think it was ruined by a really weak refereeing performance & an opposition that just lives to kick - giving 2 yellows & not sending him off, then saying it was rescinded - that reffing team need a rocket..

I'm genuinely hopeful the game v Japan will be much more of an entertaining game - they play good technical football & have come on loads..

I agree the referee spoilt the game, it could have been decent if England had picked a full strength team and used it as a measure of how it would do, as Uruguay were certainly up for it.
It was quite a strange team to play when the plan seemed to be to experiment with players.

Why weren't the assistants or VAR screaming at him to get the red out after he'd shown the second yellow.

Massive black mark against the ref.
Because it was in fact Jose Gimenez who was booked for the first incident, and he was the player seen to be protesting to referee Sven Jablonski at the time that yellow was shown.

The ITV captioning, showing that Ugarte was the player booked for the earlier incident, turns out to have been incorrect.

Here are screen captures from the Opta statistics.

Poor media coverage again.

We really are poorly served by commentators and so called experts.

How Uruguay are so animated… in a friendly!

They hotly contested the England goal (which, less face it, wouldn’t get a second glance in the prem) and fought for the penalty decision, AGAIN, a nothing - nothing challenge IMO. They were chewy all night.

Is this a precursor to the WC? That is, will one of the tournaments favourites be targeted by teams in a similar fashion? I feel like it’s gonna be another no-show by our lot (the English amongst you on FMTTM)

I wonder why the 4th official said that Ugarte's 2nd yellow had been rescinded then rather than just confirming it was his 1st yellow.
