EU double standards on travel restrictions

Not sure EU states stated it was out of control back in March.

Nor does the US have tunnel direct to Europe or is on the same continent.

Immediately prior to that, did the EU state it was out of control in their region?
Exactly, foot gun - gun foot. Is there no limit to how stupid our politicians can be, why didn’t he just put his hands in his hair and run around screaming ‘we’re all doomed, doomed!!’

As an Island nation we could have contained the virus but no this Government just kept digging its head in the sand to keep the country going. Back in March we should have closed the border, just like France has, and cancelled all flights in and out of the country except for freight, repatriation and vital supplies. They have now let some in the South to escape and spread it around. Will he be pushed of jump.

I'd imagine this is also a move by the EU to prevent the UK government from blaming covid for border restrictions after Jan 1st.

By implementing a blockade now they can open up again next week and force the UK to choose to close for either allowing covid to spiral further out of control (by their own admission) or due to lack of a Brexit deal.

Either way the UK government is cupable and it is difficult to spin as EU intransigence or knee-jerking.

It is slightly pointless though, given that this variant had been around since September and is already present in many other European countries.

They may not have said it was out of control, but it clearly was. In any event the only difference is a question of degree. The underlying principle espoused by the EU in relation to the US ban, is exactly the same.
