European Cup Winners Cup replaced by Europa League?

There were 3 competitions - European Cup, Cup Winners Cup, UEFA Cup (which had already more or less replaced Fairs Cup)

Now we have Champions League Europa League and Europa Conference League

Like Divisions 1-4 being renamed Premier League, Championship and Divisions 1 and 2 I suppose

The Cup Winners Cup didn't work once they extended the amount of teams that qualified for the European Cup and UEFA Cup as most of the time the Cup Winner (and runner up) had qualified for one of the other European Competitions through their League position. I'm sure this is true for most leagues across Europe.

Humpty is correct, the last Cup Winners Cup was in 1999.

The Europa Conference League replaced the Inter-Toto Cup which was more of a preliminary round to the Uefa Cup. The problem with the the Inter-Toto cup was that it was played in July/August and was essentially adding 6-8 weeks to a teams season.
