Everton - Do They Hold The Most Relegation Great Escapes?

Probably Hartlepool in the 70's and 80's, there used to be a vote to see if the bottom club in the old 4th would be replaced by the top team in the conference, because league clubs didn't want relegation Hartlepool used to avoid relegation year after year.

Such a scruffy horrible club.

They refuse to flush though to br fair to them.

With sheff U and Luton already pretty much relegated next season, Everton will probably survive again.

Like Bournemouth were this season?

As for Everton: not even close. They've seriously flirted with relegation in about 4 seasons in the PL era. I don't know why, but this seems to be massively exaggerated by some.

As a kid in the late70s and early 90s, Coventry and Saints seemed to hang in their every year no matter what.

It was that completely unexpected and out of character beating of Brighton a few weeks back that got them out of it .. even a draw there would have seen them gone .. it's a funny old game, as they say ..

Everton have only been caught up in two proper relegation battles in the last 25 years.

Top of my head I'd say Charlton.
I've had a quick look at the last 40 yrs or so and it looks like Sunderland get the award - with four last day survivals (80/81, 81/82, 01/02, 08/09). Which is nice. (Top flight only).

Although there are plenty of perennial 'survivors', as far as I can see the only other team in that period with more only than one last day survival is West Brom with two (04/05, 13/14).

And Brighton hit the woodwork plenty of times in that game - freak result

Yeah, there used to be loads of teams caught up in the re-election process year after year - them, Rochdale - who've finally gone this year - Southport, etc etc. Pools were the most (11), followed by Crewe. It was all the old Third Division North teams in general who ended up at the bottom of Division 4 and not kick on when the Third Division South did.

It wasn't the Conference in those days, just a mish-mash of non league affiliations. You didn't necessarily have to win anything, Hereford in 1972 is the prime example, finished second in the Southern League.

Couple of egregious ones - Gateshead voted out at the first time of asking in favour of Peterborough (who'd won the Midland League five times in a row), and I always felt a bit sorry for Barrow who got voted out when Hereford had the cup run when they beat the Geordies in 1972. Remember the Barrow chairman saying something like "when your town names not on the Football Pools every week, people forget you exist".

This is an interesting piece on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Re-election_(Football_League)

Are they still under investigation for financial irregularities? I'm sure I'd read somewhere previously about other clubs having discussions about suing them over relegation.
Same with city too. Surely the rules need changing so that failing to cooperate with league investigations is treated in a similar manner to refusing a road side breath test and carries a penalty of automatic relegation.

Everton hold the record in English football as spending the most seasons in the top flight, and they are second only to Arsenal for consecutive seasons in the top flight.

Only Arsenal and Everton remain as the two teams that have never been out of the top tier in my lifetime.
