Evidently it is a Derby.

I guess it depends on your definition of derby, I've always gone with geographic proximity. As such Newcastle and Sunderland would be our "derbies" (plus Darlo and Pools). To a lesser extent the Yorkshire teams (Leeds?) but I think that's as a result of historically aligning ourselves with the North East rather than Yorkshire, at least in footballing terms?

Liverpool United isn't a derby (in my book at least) - it's a historic rivalry based on them being two of the most successful teams in the country. The respective derbies for those sides are Everton and City.
Isn't it a historic rivalry based on the the ship canals?

Exactly that. Man United versus Liverpool is a huge rivalry but not a derby. That's a big difference. As it happens, I was watching a Gary Neville "soccer" box the other night. It was with Tony Adams and it featured a game against Spurs in the mid-90's. It was interesting hearing Adams mentioning Arsenal players didn't consider Spurs rivals, as they were miles behind. The game was a local derby, but the real rivalry was with Man United at that time.

Last night had a bigger attendance and better atmosphere, it definitely means something more to our fans than the average match, possibly just because it's not nice being called sex offenders.
I've lived in south Durham areas and the sunlun fans there hated Boro and reminded me constantly, maybe their fans from further north don't care because they work/ live near less of us.

I don't care about the ones who say it isnt a derby, it's those who say that it's just like another game to them that irritate me. Probably shouldn't say that, because I'm probably playing into their hands, but there's clearly added spice whenever we play each other. The only reason I think they try and deny this is because they feel they can lord it over us, "Little Boro are just desperate for us to acknowledge them".

Although I thought their fans didn't seem up for it during the game last night, you only have to look at the way they behaved after the final-whistle to see that the defeat clearly hurt them. As I said, I walked through the car park behind the east stand and they were absolutely raging, kicking and punching the fence, and pretending to try and break through it to get at the Boro fans which was funny.

Mogga’s teams usually start well then fade second half of the season don’t they - i can only see it ending badly for him there. They have a few decent players in the forward positions - think we missed a trick there with not getting Sims, but they look pretty poor at the back

I see it as a derby game.
But it doesn't bother me one little bit if mackems see it differently.
I think they are trying to say we are insignificant to them.
I don't have a problem with that at all.
As long as they keep giving us the three points.

To an extent I actually get where they're coming from; with regards to it being a Derby or not.

As a Yorkshire cricket follower I see Lancashire as our only rivals - and thats coming from someone who has lived in 'ceremonial' Durham for over fifty years.
I don't get it. We have always shared Tyne-Tees television, which has a large cultural impact on us, half of us were born in County Durham, it has always traditionally been a derby. It might not be the biggest game to them, but it is important, particularly to sunderland.

Norwich Ipswich is a derby, Sheff Utd Leeds is a derby, Southampton Bournemouth is a derby.....all those teams are further away from each other than Boro and Sunderland.

Fact is the ONS defines Middlesbrough as being part of the North East, so it is a North East derby.

Boro v York, Scarborough or Harrogate would be a north riding derby?

I guess it goes on your historical matches. The Victoria Ground is the closest ground to the Riverside so if we drew them in the cup it would be the Teesside Derby

Pools and Darlo have always hated each other but they havent played each other in a long time (March 2007). Who would Spennymoor's local rivals have been before Darlington's decline? There's beef between them two but historically they arent Darlos rivals but they have ineffect replaced Pools

There will be desperate for it to be a Derby in years to come as they won’t be playing the Barcodes for a long time and even if they though, there is absolutely no way they will be competitive.

They need us more then we need them.

Blades v Wednesday is the main focus in Sheffield. Leeds are clearly disliked but only slightly more than every other team in the country who hate them as well 😂

Something about getting battered everywhere they go.
Pure venom on some of their faces.
Considering being a Yorkshire club is apparently an insult,
it did our Australian lad no harm.
Inbreeds are inbreeds on Wearside.
Havent changed a bit have they?

The reality is Teesside and Middlesbrough is closer to Sunderland and Sunderland supporting areas than large parts of Newcastle supporting Northumberland. The Geordie fans I know north of Newcastle don't even acknowledge Sunderland. They quite like Boro too as it happens. That said, the Tyne and Wear area is much more joined together than Wearside and Teesside, so it's natural that area feels more as one.

I must say I've got an opposite view to many regarding games against local sides. I'm North East England born and bred and like to see all the local teams do well. Travelling extensively throughout the area also gives me a different perspective of the area. I'm of the opinion that the big three sides should all be in the top flight together, as long as Boro win all the games of course.
I used to know a lad in Blyth and his mate in Alnwick and they couldnt give a monkeys about Sunlun.
In fact they were always on about Blyth Spartans
Sunlun believe their own hype.
When I shared a hammock in Horsley Hill, there were just as many on the bus to Newcastle as the one to Sunlun. One came from Jarra and looped one way round the hill via Marsden back to Jara. The other along the old Sunlun Road then headed back towards Bolden.
As the buses past each other at the Hill they would open the windows, shout obscenities an spit at each other.
Its all a load of bollix.
