Ex-Nottingham Forest star Britt Assombalonga could be set for cheap exit

The Middlesbrough forward is out of contract in the summer and it is being speculated that the Reds' Championship rivals may be ready to cash in during the January window

Former Nottingham Forest forward Britt Assombalonga could be set for a cheap exit from Middlesbrough amid fears they will lose him for nothing in the summer.

Assombalonga is out of contract at the Riverside at the end of the season and the Mirror are now reporting that Boro could be willing to let him leave on the cheap rather than lose him for nothing.

Assombalonga was a huge favourite at the City Ground where he smashed in 30 goals in 47 games and was regarded as one of the best strikers to have pulled on the Garibaldi Red in recent times.

Middlesbrough signed Assombalonga for £15m after triggering a release clause in his deal with the majority of Forest fans sad to see the former Peterborough forward quit the City Ground.

Assombalonga has worn the armband at Boro this season, but with no sign of a new deal on the table, Boro are reportedly open to offers for the centre forward.

What do you think about Britt Assombalonga? Would you like to see him back at the City Ground to bolster the club's forward line or has his time come and gone?

Yep he’s a proven goal scorer I’d say get him back most definitely

Should sign if he accepts our wage limits. We need him.

No chance, as his wage demands would be far too high !!

If he can pass a strict medical, and the monies are right.

Strange one. Is our record signing going to be allowed to leave on a free. Could we have got £5m from him in the summer and let Warnock get in a CF that is more suited to our style?

Personally don’t see it as a strange one. He has 6 months left on his contract and there will be desperate clubs out there who probably believe they are getting a player better than he is. We would be stupid not to cash in if the offers come in. Anything over 1.5 million and I would be delighted, as it his wages off the wage bill aswell.

Should be able to bring someone more suited to what Warnock wants.

On that basis we could let him go on a free to save the wages.
But he doesn’t have to go. If nobody comes close to matching his wages he could see out his contract, which he obviously has every right to do

Anything we can get is a bonus, I was looking back at some of the supposed salaries, wow, Gestede, Ayala, Friend,Clayton etc and Britt at the very top.
Going forward we must be in a better place having lost all these big earners

We should be paying clubs to take him,in the current climate his wages are crippling, its not like we are getting any kind of return for our investment.

I know that. I’m thinking more of the clubs point of view. We will be doing everything in our power to try and get something for him in this window.

Im not saying youre wrong as I don't know, but there is very little press speculation about him leaving
We'll know in 17 days anyway

Forest and Derby interested apparently. Not sure how Derby could afford him considering they are meant to be skint

It was actually 30 goals in 69 appearances during his three year stay at Forest.
He was out for almost a year during that period with a severe knee injury.

One option might be to arrange a swap for the next 5 months:
1 x expensive paid player on short term contract for another.
Say Britt to Bristol City and Famara Diedhiou here.

Great for us - Britt not first choice striker anymore anyway.
Not sure how much game-time Fam is getting at City but chances may be limited due to him running down his contract
Player continues to pick up their cash but gets a chance to try to establish themselves at a new club.

Win Win?
