Fan Reactions to Linked Managers

Southgate - one of the most successful England managers that we have seen. Hugely influential throughout the ages groups with England has had a massive impact on grassroots football and acted impeccable despite a horrific and destructive tabloid culture. One of our own, captained the most sucrose Middlesbrough team in history and managed the team successfully in the premier league before the banks pulled the plug. Even had us in a good position in the championship as a brand new manager learning on the job when we dumped him for a manager that destroyed the club for years to come.

Fans - nah, I just don’t rate him as a club manager.

Carrick - a hugely influential player who was well respected by the very best managers and players in the game for his attitude, communication skills and technical knowledge. Took over Man Utd who have been in utter turmoil.. got results straight away hit the ground running. Took the boro job when league safety was brought into question.. from the worst start in history he turned the club round to promotion contenders. For the next two seasons he still had us competing despite key players being sold and missing half the squad.. no recognised defenders at one point.

Fans - bleauggh, not having him back with all that tippy tappy stuff.

O’Neil - Played over 100 games for Boro, captained the side. a model professional who continued to play at the highest level after he left us. went on to manage in the premier league for over 100 games in difficult circumstances winning plaudits from players and a like.

Fans - he said he watched golf when he was suspended.. not for me.. never!

Raphael Wicky - never heard of him., so he must be good. Celtic are after him so we will probably miss out.

It's not the same fans saying the same things.
Most fans appear not to want a Carrick return.
Most fans seem not to want O'Neil at any cost.
I think most fans would be delighted with Southgate, but think it unlikely.

Personally I'd be happy with someone I'm not familiar with, as how could I have a reasonable opinion about somebody I know nothing about?
But I know a fair bit about Carrick and O'Neil and don't want them anywhere near our club.

Rather an unknown than someone who is known to be good but fans have a poor opinion of.

As I said on the OGS thread, purely from a managerial point of view, O’Neil is probably the best available, but there’s too much dislike for him from fans based on a comment he made about something that happened over 15 years ago. And whilst I understand that, we need to think about the here and now and getting promoted.

Personally I just don’t want someone back who we have already sacked. So that would leave GoN in your list.

I’d give GoN a chance for sure. Is he my preferred candidate? Probably not. Neither was Edwards.

I think Gibson knows this next appointment is a crucial one - let’s hope he gets it right.

You missed one, if we keep Adi as interim for five or six weeks that Rob Edward’s from Wolves will probably be available 😂😂

Returning to the Boro family was always my dream.

I'd have crawled the 170 miles back to my spiritual home at the Riverside.

We're all human and make mistakes but I'm back where I belong and can't wait to get started on getting this massive club promoted.

Didn't he say he got booked on purpose so that he got suspended and could watch the golf?

Saying that, attitudes change as you get older and i wouldn't be too bothered if he was made manager.

It's not just "something that happened". It was a key player in a season that we got relegated and which has set us back as a club since that point. It displayed the attitude and the contempt he had/has for fans of the club. He was a player whose attitude had always been questioned and he was providing evidence to the fans that they were correct. Laughing about it years later as though it was a funny story just proved that his attitude is poor. Why would anyone want someone with those qualities leading their football club? He'll be off quicker than Rob Edwards if the right opportunity came up. The minimum we should expect from players is that they at least try their best. He is a player that never did so how is he going to expect players to do that for him?

If Gibson did give him a chance then as soon as anything goes against him as a manager the fans would be on his back because they don't like him.

I want a manager who I respect and admire
Giovanni Van Bronckhorst - Charismatic/ experienced/ stature
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink - history / legend / experienced as manager and coach
George Boateng - History / Legend / experienced now / energy to succeed
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - Stature / experienced
Phillipe Clement - Stature / experienced
Steven Gerrard- stature/ experienced/ drive
Gareth Southgate- history / legend / experience

It will help if they know the club and area and are happy to relocate to the area
Any of them for me

genuinely confused by people constantly talking about Southgate
if he gets back into management it's going to be top 6 Prem not coming back here

Yup. Probably time to let that go.
Temporarily let it go. Then when he leaves/gets sacked we can use that as a massive stick to beat him with

"Yeah, never trusted him or wanted him as a manager especially after that time he got banned so he could watch the golf. Obviously I gave him the benefit of the doubt and I got behind him and the team when he was here, but never trusted him. Glad he is gone he has as much time as he wants to watch golf now".😉

*I've convinced myself now he is the right man for the job, Gary O'Neil red and white army 😂

I'm confused about anyone being mentioned - None of us have any clue who the club are interested in or managers who want to be considered.

It's all gossip from the same people day in and day out.
