Fishing

A friend of mine has a small business fishing crab out of Montrose.

He's stuck in harbour and unable to fish as exporters are not purchasing his catch, due to obvious Brexit related issues. Normally the stuff he catches goes to France within 24 hours. Exporters are currently stopped for sending anything to mainland Europe.

This Government really is inept in so many ways.

Project fear. According to the brexit cultists on here.

92% (apparently) the fishing industry voted for it. It baffles me how much you can not know about your own industry to believe this could possibly have worked out better than the single market.

The explanation is that they were blindsided by greed. Greed that they aren't allowed to catch as much as they want, greed that other people are catching what they wanted for themselves.

Was the market not working for them, with their multi million pounds turnover businesses? It's a hell of a lot worse now.

There was a film doing the rounds on Twitter yesterday of some fish exporter in London. Filmed in 2017 he was dismissive of any Brexit issues and said we'll just carry on and actually thrive! Filmed this week, he's completely changed his tune and is now very worried.

I'm taking no pleasure in watching this unfold. It's absolutely tragic and stinks of corruption.

The majority of shellfish caught by British boars goes to the EU, unbelievable that they thought severing trading links to their biggest market would go well.
They shat the bed we all have to lie in

Images of fishermen and farmers before the referendum will have reinforced views that leaving the EU would be better for the country.

Yep. Being told "we'll take control of our waters" did for them. I know a few ex-fishermen and they're all bitter about French and Spanish fishing in so called UK waters, so that lie really got them excited.

I am loosely engaged in the fishing industry, and I understand that some boats based in Northern Scotland and the Islands are in fact landing their catch in Denmark to avoid the export nonsense and delays.

The Scottish fish processing industry employs about 10,000 people I think.

I saw an bit on Sky News that showed an interview from before the Brexit vote with a glass eel farmer (?) and a UKIP rep, who were both pushing the virtues of BRexit, and the farmer was saying that even though 75% of his business was to Europe, Brexit would mean he could have more control of his selling prices to individual countries, and increase his ability to export worldwide, he estimated that his 26 strong workforce would double within 12 months of Brexit.

The second part of the interview was with the farmer this week ( no UKIP rep surprise surprise) and basically the farmer said he had made a massive mistake and that his business was fooked as he now sells nothing at all to Europe due to paperwork and customs, and that his customers are buying from France and Holland instead. and absolutely no worldwide business has appeared. so its now him and i think 1 other employee left. The surprise was that he stated he wouldn't have voted for brexit if he knew it was going to affect him and his industry and jobs. You dont say??

The whole thing is a shambles.

Fishing is such a minor part of the economy (around 0.1% & we import twice as much as we export) I don't know why we were bothered about it pre or post brexit.

It's a good distraction from bigger issues. Everyone is concentrating on the fish and 9gnoring the service industry which makes up the majority of our economy.

Its the perfect thing to get the Brexiteers frothing at the mouth about those dirty foreigners coming over here and stealing our jobs/fish/womeen etc etc.

idiots.

Dont know how true it is but I heard a report on the radio that Harrods generates more income than the fishing industry to Britain...wonder if Nige knew that?

Watched 'Cornwall: A Fishing Life' the other night. One of the skippers was completely realistic in saying that they wouldn't get quotas of 100% of fish in British waters as it would destroy the fishing industry in the EU. I think the government's focus on fishing during negotiations was not about improving the lot of our fishing industry it was about the potential damage we could do to the EU industry, it was the only lever we had.

Probably is.

According to the ONS 42,000 people are employed in the sector (including Marine & Freshwater fishing, Processing and preserving of fish; crustaceans and molluscs, Wholesale of fish; crustaceans and molluscs and Retail sale of fish; crustaceans and molluscs in specialised stores).

About the same number emplyed by fitness facilities and a fifth of the number of Hairdressers & Beauticians (which I'm amazed at as it seems like every other shop is a Turkish barbers or a Nail Bar, whereas the closest I've got to the fishing industry is sucking on a Fisherman's Friend).

So what’s your point then?
