Gambling Firms to be Banned - Shirt Sponsorship

Personally I think adverts on TV (especially mid game) and radio adds on Talksport are far worse and more likely to make you place a bet.

I don't think many look at a shirt and think 'I'll put a bet on'. Although sat watching super Sunday (used loosely) you will think 'oh City are playing well so I'll bang £10 on them scoring 5'.

Also hate how talksport run a paddy Power add then give it the throw away line 'when the fun stops stop'. I mean that's really going to stop an addict😕. The worst part is they often have ex sportsmen who have had gambling issues on to talkabout it. Then run a fecking add.

I guess its a start. I don't think removing the logo from shirts will actually achieve much in terms of stopping people gambling. I never bought a heritage hamper😂.

Just look at what's on a cigarette packet and what we know smoking does to you. Yet millions smoke 20-40 a day with no f*cks given. People just do what they want to do.

Half of talkSPORTs ad revenue must be from gambling adverts, or at least when I use to listen. They use to have someone from one of the bookies come on and give odds on some games for 15 minutes at a time.

A few seasons back I was asked to name all the PL teams shirt sponsors and I was shocked at how many I did know. I think it is one of those subconscious things you take in.
I don't think I could as I no longer watch premier league. However there is an insidiousness to it. For example I can tell you the sponsors of the team clsoest to my office and to my house, without having watched them play this season. Teamviewer and Hollywood Bets. So it clearly works if I've manged to absorb those without watching a game. Mind the first one is probably the most ubiquitous shirt in the world.

Its going to be a massive shock to the industry and I can see a lot of clubs not actually getting sponsorship. I t will also force down income revenue for the clubs.

The big problem I see is that the betting companies will still want a piece of the pie... So all that will happen is that the tv adverts will increase.

I wish we could go the full turn and just ban it like it currently is in America. Its worked for nearly 100 years.(although they have challenged it recently in the courts) Its refreshing to see the NFL Teams with no sponsors on the tops or around the side of the fields. Its even better not seeing the adds on the tv (unless you watch Sky in the uk of course)

I should have added that this was when we were in the Premier League. I don't think I could now - the wife asked the other day why we still have Sky Sport, I never seem to watch it.

It's not banned in America. NJ has legalised online gambling and the TV channels are chock full of ads for it.

Really? I knew a few states were looking into it but didn't realise it was active. I watch most of the NFL and NHL when its on and cant say I have seen any ads for it on the streams I have been watching.

are the adverts just local channels or the big national ones?

i still like the fact the tops dont have sponsors on.

Yeah I was thinking that. Betting companies are so dominant as shirt sponsors, it’s about 50% of the league I think, I was wondering which companies are going to replace them?

Going to be some very funny returns to the likes of Heritage Hampers and Crown Paints as sponsors of global sporting behemoths.

Absolutely the right decision. Problem gambling is just as bad, if not worse, than problem drinking for people and families. It's shameful the amount of advertising for betting companies online and TV. Those ex-players are even worse for being involved - money talks I suppose.

It's heavily advertised on the channels in the metro NY area, although they do specify that it's restricted to NJ. I never watched much US TV - mainly just morning and evening "news" and football if there was a game on NBC.

Lots of teams have a secondary sponsor for selling kids shirts. They could revert to them whilst they search for other deals

Good on ya Bolton!(y)

Bolton Wanderers end any association with gambling as football betting sponsorship ban looms

Numerous clubs are sponsored by betting firms, but Bolton are the first to rule out any on-site gambling or any future sponsorship

By Tom Morgan, Sports News Correspondent

Bolton Wanderers have cut all ties with betting firms ahead of a likely Government clampdown on gambling sponsorship in football. The League One club's chair, Sharon Brittan, issued a statement acknowledging "problem gambling ruins lives" as Bolton became the first EFL club to take such an overt position.

Telegraph Sport disclosed in January how the Government was likely to rid football of betting sponsors on shirts. One leading anti-gambling campaigner believes ministers are also toying with new restrictions on stadium hoardings and TV adverts too.

Ahead of a white paper set to be published this winter, Bolton took matters into their own hands, ruling out any on-site betting provision at the stadium. The club also vowed to avoid any new commercial partnerships and sponsorships with firms representing the gambling industry.

“Problem gambling ruins lives and we’ve taken this stance to show our support for those who are suffering from a betting addiction,” said Brittan.

The EFL is sponsored by a betting company but Bolton’s chief executive Neil Hart said the club would not be participating in any promotion outside of their existing obligations.

Meanwhile, the soon-to-be-published fan-led review of football is set to recommend abandoning the ban on fans drinking beer while watching matches.

Allowing National League and League Two venues to serve alcohol could ease the pressure on lower league clubs and help tackle pre-game binge drinking, the MP chairing the review believes.

A pilot allowing pints to be served mid-match for the first time in 36 years should be considered because "our view on alcohol and football is outdated", Tracey Crouch told The Times.

In explaining her decision to rule out gambling sponsors, Brittan cited research showing up to 1.4 million British adults and at least 60,000 youngsters between 11 and 16 who are addicted. “We as an industry must do more and through our work with Bolton Wanderers in the Community, Bolton Wanderers Football Club will support outreach programmes for those who experience gambling problems," she said.

Hart added: “We recognise that some people do want to bet and also that the league has a commercial partnership with a gambling company in place and we are respectful of this.

“However, we will not take part in any activity to promote gambling outside the existing EFL contractual requirements.”

Dont know why alot are so happy with tbis. 32red have put millions into mfc. Hope same posters dont moan when we buy no players or go bust. Im all for letting gambling sites advertise. The solution is capping betting limits and alerting players online for example that theyre on a losing streak somehow and to stop them betting fir a period. Also some kind of joined up database to stop punters just moving to another online betting company to bet woyld be good.

We can always hope that it leads to more sanity in the game. No more ridiculous transfer fees and inflated wages.

I'm conflicted here,It's well meant and I see they're trying to reduce temptation, but what about personal responsibility?. Should we ration food to prevent obesity, fortunately I've never had lifestyle addictions but is the answer prohibition. On a personal level I'm a virulent anti smoker and see no upside to it and would like to see an end to it but would that be right. What next a ban on motor sports to reduce climate change,, theoretically right but in reality just more control of our lives.
