Geese

I got into them through absolute chance. Sometimes go through periods of time where I realise I’m not listening to music and wonder how and where a new sound could gain my affections or move me.

Not much of a pop kinda fella but Joe Keery (Djo) pulled at my heart strings recently, especially after replaying Steel River so many times after the loss of one of our own. Djo’s track and the very simple line that almost all of us Teessiders have heard over the years;

“You take the man out of the…”

I guess it ties into why I love FMTTM so much as well. After decade on another continent, I feel it harder than ever.

But anyway, enough about me, Geese, wonderful stuff.

I’m a sailor in a big red boat. I’m a sailor in a big red coat.

Don't mind their first album, the lead singer has a cracking voice, but am unable to get passed the first song on their latest. I have no idea if it gets any better, but I find difficult to believe it could get any worse.

I’ve recommended it to a few folk who’ve all got in touch after listening to Trinidad and gone wtf is this? The rest of the album is amazing but appreciate that one is a struggle.

It does. In spades. First track is the weakest on the album.

It's an excellent album, came in at number 10 in my top 50 albums of the year.

Initially it was slated to be higher but there were a couple of tracks where the vocal irritated me a bit but listening since I finalised my list I'm damn if I know which two they were so that's a positive

Each to their own but I think it's a fantastic opening. Certainly makes you sit up and take notice.

I remember a Bright Eyes interview from years back where they mentioned always putting a challenging track up first, essentially to ward off casual listeners but I think there's something in that.

Don’t dislike it but my introduction to the album was Taxes and 100 Horses, if I’d come in at Trinidad I may not have been sold on it quite so easily.
