Geese

They’re fine but the album is pretty dull, I really expected more the way everyone has been going on about them on here.
Cobra is a stand out track for me, that’s the only one.

Struggling with the idea of wanting to ward off the casual listener. Seems a bit elitist to me.
Yeah I think there are hints of that to be fair. Probably indicative of a band who know where they sit in the pecking order. Persistence for reward I guess, most of the openers tend to be sound collages which set some context for what follows but appreciate it's not for everyone. Even I, a huge fan of the band, have been known to skip them from time to time.

It has to be one of the worst opening songs on an album ever. Whoever thought it was a good idea to place that song there wants sacking.

Sorry @changingman that wasn't a targeted dig. I was discussing this the other day with someone. I just can't get my head round why someone would purposely do that. If it's to remove the 'casual' fan...that seems a bit pretentious.

No, not at all! I agree that it certainly could come across that way but I can also see the rationale in some cases. In Bright Eyes' case I think there probably was some gatekeeping there, trying to avoid gaining attention from the "wrong type" of fan, BE being an indie band through and through and probably not in it for either fame or fortune.

As for Trinidad, I (personally) think it sets the scene perfectly. Within the first minute or so there is a definite disorientation - "what is this?" - 30s delta blues, an unreleased Radiohead outtake, New Orleans' Jazz etc but I think it does a very good job of tying together the stylistic shifts which follow on the album.

It's certainly a bold choice, and one which would fall completely flat if the rest of the album wasn't so exceptional, but for me, that's kind of the point. Within minutes you know you're listening to something very original and innovative and this is backed up over the remainder of the run time.

I think the reason why i dislike it personally is because my perceived 'scattiness' of the the track reminded me of Black Midi and their 'scattiness'. I really didn't get away with Black Midi at all so i probably subconsciously linked them. For me it's particularly annoying because i quite enjoy the rest of the album.
