Gyokores?

A single performance at the Riverside can sway an opinion a long way in one direction or the other.

Gyokores did play well at the Riverside and won a lot of fans as a result.

Conversely, Ivan Toney had a forgetable game in the cup a few years back, leading to plenty of "please not him" based on that performance when he was linked. That was clearly wrong.

I also remember Mikkel Forsell being championed on here on the basis of that crazy match vs Birmingham, but he never really amounted to much.

Is the Gyokores assessment accurate? I wouldn't spend big money based on it. Nor would I on his figures last season; the previous season he scored 3 in 30.

I'd have to have watched him live a lot more to have a strong conviction that he's worth big money.

I think we have done a lot worse over the years than Mikkel Forssel!

I don't think he was a turkey either.

However, his moderate 126 goals in 464 games (many in 2nd tier football, or the Finnish division) didn't justify the hype he received on here having knocked in a couple and, admittedly, playing well in a match at the Riverside. His peak was really around our peak: the cup win and Europe. He would have been a step or two down in terms of the strikers we had at the time

Yeah, let's play it the guaranteed midfield way - another George Saville anyone?
We have wasted money in virtually every position.
Flint, Saville, Gestede etc etc.
We have also spent money very well in virtually every position.
Ayala, Clayton, Traore, Bamford etc etc.
We've had exceptional loans like Ramirez and Bamford.
We've had 22 loan players since then and not one good one until Giles.

It is not bad to spend big, it is to spend badly.
Judgement is required. I thought that was what we had put in place?

One thing that makes his stats last year a little bit more impressive is he doesn't take pens.

Often when a striker scores 15-20 goals a fair few are pens. Not that penalties don't count obviously, but they can distort the stats a bit, particularly if you're buying someone to "put the chances away". Surely just goals in open play are a better indicator of how often/how well a striker does that.

One of the things that put me off Waghorn a bit was that his impressive stats for Ipswich were mostly based on set pieces. He had a lot of assists and goals, but a lot of them were pens or assists from corners etc. Nothing wrong with that, but it did distort the perception of how creative a player he was really was (IMO).

I like gyorkeres’ aggression and I think his style will suit us away from home especially. Of course it is a risk but if the club are happy to invest the Spence windfall in him then I am happy.

To be fair Coventry think they can get 25m for him, and their fans don't want him to go, even though it could easily fund a promotion push.

That says a lot, plus he got 17 goals last year, for a pretty average side, especially without him. That's also the same as Lord Bamford got for us in his best year, and a lot more than he got for us in any other year and more than he got for Leeds in the Champo.

We shouldn’t be signing anyone for fees approaching £15-20m - even £8-10m is a huge outlay for a championship club and it’s a risk i don’t think we should be taking. Gyokeres looks like a decent player but he’s had one season where’s he’s done well and averaged about one goal in three. Whether he can do that again this season and there after is another question - he’s far from proven.

Sometimes you have to take a punt. Gyokeres looks to be on an upward spiral. If we can get him for a decent fee now (say 8 -10M) plus add-ons, he could be worth a lot more this time next year and well out of our reach. We haven't had a strong goal scoring forward for a very long time (probably Ian Baird), and will take a lot of pressure off the rest of the side. A big yes from me!!!

So this guy's come in to euphoria and high expectations, suffered a dip in form and put up with the boo boys and armchair critics all before he's even agreed to sign.

We may never see him in a Boro shirt, but don't ever pretend he doesn't know what it means to be a Boro player.

We’re not going to get Gyokeres with a cheque for £10m even with add ons. Be realistic, we’d be up in arms if we sold our star striker who’d just knocked in 17 goals an been player of the season to another rival for that relatively low figure

Yeah

As if we’d be so stooopid to do that

£10m plus add ons is not a reletively low figure. Its a huge sum for a transfer between two championship clubs. Unless a premiership club are interested in Gyokeres then I very much doubt there'll be a better offer than that placed for him.

That Viduka chap wasn't too shabby to be fair

I agree. I like what I saw at the Riverside but I have seen players have a fantastic season and struggle to repeat it. Nothing is guaranteed in a transfer.

£10 million between championship clubs is huge at the moment.

There doesn’t seem to be a clamour from the premier league for him.

Spence sale looks like it may not happen and without those funds we will have to shop elsewhere
