Hartlepool's league survival

If Crawley win tonight, that's them done for i think.

Just can't string the wins together unfortunately.

That is what we are saying, the non-league pyramid leading to L2 would need to change and I still can't fathom how that will work but it did in the past in the old Div 3 & 4.

That was back when clubs had to be elected in to the Football League though, so it was almost a closed shop and they could balance it out by choice.

Hartlepool are the team who were re-elected in to the Football League the most in history, 14 times.
They dodged relegation a lot through a daft system back in the day.

I am not saying I am right but why would it be awful, what negatives do you envisage?

The benefits I see are the money clubs would save on travel, hotels, etc.
You would need to change the set up of two divisions, it would also have a bearing on league one. It may also see professional clubs turn semi pro. This will have an effect on youth systems.

Look at Torquay, another ex-league team. Were in the play-off final with Hartlepool and now look set to drop out of the National league.

I've just googled and the old Third Division North and Third Division South run from 1921 to 1958 and as TeeCider states, it only worked because it was a closed shop.

Regarding the changes to L1, I don't think you would need to make any, all changes would be made to L3 and the Conference. I also feel that it would make more clubs professional rather amateur.

By the way, this is only something I've thought might help clubs financially and not sure how or if it could work.

Edit: How do you see it impacting on the Youth Systems?

If clubs go from professional to semi pro then it changes their academy status if they have it.

Quick look at a spreadsheet i created when bored

Dates club lost their EFL status

Wrexham 07/08 (that long really?)
Notts Co 18/19
Chesterfield 17/18
Barnet 17/18
D&R 15/16
Southend 20/21
Oldham 21/22
Halifax 92/93 ** 01/02 reformed club **
York 15/16
Yeovil 18/19
Scunthorpe 21/22
Torquay 13/14
Maidstone 92/93 (went bust)

Chester 08/09
Darlo 09/10
Scarboro 98/99
Kidderminster 04/05
Hereford 11/12
Boston 06/07

Some of the above clubs have had to reform, we've also lost Bury & Macclesfield recently too

Doesnt appear to be any familiar names in NLS that i recognise from the EFL

The route straight back seems to be not very successful

Grimsby* 21/22
Cheltenham 15/16
Bristol R* 14/15
Carlisle* 04/05
Shrewsbury* 03/04

* via playoffs

But why would they need to go to semi-pro? You would be making another professional division with the North and South leagues and the league(s) under the Conference would become the highest amateur division.

The effect it would also have on the national league having to split also, they are mostly professional in that division I think it’s only 3 who aren’t but if you split it that would change.

It is only a suggestion, I don't have the power to change anything.

Something needs to change though to help the lower leagues or we will see more clubs going to the wall.

There are full-time clubs in National League North, let alone the National League....

When I said amateur I was referring to the league rather than the clubs. If, and it is a big if, the Conference did converge with L3 and create a North & South, we would be creating a 5th professional league.
