Hayes on Frozen Pitches

Posters using the argument that Womens football should be treated as a 2nd class sport, because it doesn't generate the same level of interest or wealth as the mens game, seem to have forgotten the fact that Womens football was officially banned in this country for nigh on 70 years. They also forget the decades of prejudice, ignorance and downright hostility towards the womens game.
Is it any surprise that Womens football is far behind the mens, with Mens footballs 150 year history, and the hysterical propaganda which advertises it 24/7?
Also its worth noting the England Womens team have won something in the last 50 years.

Why not make the season February to October?
When I was youth coaching we approached the TJFA (along with a few other teams) who suggested the league be ran from Easter until the middle of September. They came back and said it wouldn't be fair as kids go on holiday during the 6 weeks holidays and it's not 'tradition'. Laughable really when you take into account the amount of kids football games called off between November and February because of the weather and then having to cram games in between February and April.

I suggested the same to our local youth league and got pretty much the same response.
My lad now hasn’t played since the first weekend in December and we’re being told to rearrange games for the feb half term and Easter holidays🙈

No, no surprise at all, and it's great that the women's game has it's own profile now away from the men's game, that it's starting to see success on the pitch, that it can build it's own platform, develop players, attract new fans and grow the game.... but that needs to be self generating, as the men's game is and always has been.

It can't be 'I see what the elite men have got and I want that now. I don't want to spend time growing the sport ourselves, putting the work in, we just want what the men have got and now'.

Lower league football doesn't get the same facilities gifted. They have to grow, build success on the pitch which inevitably leads to commercial strength and the ability to improve infrastructure and facilities. Why should the women's game just get given what elite men's football has taken years and years and years to build.

Which would be fine if they were playing at Stamford Bridge and Anfield. But they aren't. They are playing at Kingsmeadow (a former non league club ground) and Prenton Park (home of Tranmere Rovers) respectively.
That's true, but it's the same point isn't it?

Totally agree

"The WSL is the same level as the Premier League - just because we're women, it doesn't mean we shouldn't be afforded the same access.’

Just can’t understand statement like this and why they are not challenged.

Nobody has set out to freeze the WSL teams pitches to sabotage them.

One Championship game on Saturday and three League One games last night postponed due to pitch inspections. These club managers are not in the press complaining that they do not have the same facilities to get pitches to a playable standard as Premier League clubs yet are arguably teams of a better standard of football than the WSL.

Seems to be non-stop at present.

You didn't read/listen to the full interview, did you? If you had, you'd have notice that she was asked a question, answered it and put forward more than one possible solution for it. She was understandably frustrated considering one her players picked up a knock due to the conditions before it was called off.

I've seen male managers in lower leagues also make angry statements in the same situations.

Nobody is saying it should be treated as a 2nd class sport. They are saying that it would be madness to spend £1m per club (£500k installation plus running costs) so a sport that generates about £1m per club per year don't have a handful of games re-arranged.

Hayes has tried to make the point that the Women's PL is equal to the Men's PL but it isn't because it isn't school sports day, it's competing businesses.

I can understand her frustration, but it needs WSL to generate more fans, revenue and interest and be self-sufficient to provide stadiums with the right facilities.

They need to be careful of ideology over pragmatism. Ideologically she and others want equal resources and assets for the womens game, but pragmatically it can't afford that yet. The NASL in the states ideologically wanted to be on a par with attendances, and superstars and facilities with european clubs, it over reached and went pop within 15 years. The WSL needs to steadily grow it's base, it's revenue and it's infrastructure and marketing, until it can afford better facilities.

A meritocracy only works when everyone competing have the same advantages and disadvantages.
Women aren't asking for an unfair advantage, just for what has been unfairly denied them for a best part of a century to be given.

I think it needs to be more nuanced than just viewing both sexes game as "competing businesses".
Before it was banned and restricted due to the sexist and misogynistic attitudes of the mens FA, women's football was attracting crowds of 50,000 plus. I think some compensation is more than due.

Not aimed at WSL. The frustration is aimed at the outlets/media coverage.

Not sure anyone has said they do watch it? Strange comment.

It's nothing like the promotion for NBA/NFL etc.

WSL is promoted much more than those examples you've given.

Who mentioned female commentators and analysts? And what has that got to do with anything?
Mate you have hit the nail on the head.

If you dare to call into question a ridiculous statement
stop beating around the bush, the whole undertone is that women should know their place right?
If you are referring to my post as OP then no the undertone was not this.

What has made you think that?

I think this is clearly nonsense. They have to rearrange a few games. Nobody is stopping them playing. They just aren't having someone else's money spent on them.

They aren't slaves due reparations.

I'm sure we all agree that footballers earn too much money but the fact is that we as paying customers spend a lot of money to watch these players playing football so they can justify paying what they do. Not as many people pay to watch the championship so they get less than the PL. Even fewer people watch L1, L2 and below and they get paid less and their facilities aren't as good. It's madness from the women's game to think they can just skip right to the top without building the brand first. They get tiny crowds (in someone else's stadium) and their ticket prices are really low so revenues are miniscule. They are already getting loads of help.
