How can professional sportsmen be “ unfit “ ?

Just thinking of the current 60 min drop off by the Boro , how can this be ? , i thought it was a given that if you were paid to play a sport that relies on fitness that you would be fit for at least the 90 mins .

Good point, poor training, not using the technology available, old school fitness routines?
Wilder has mentioned a few times about the poor fitness and conditioning, obviously something they are going to work on.
Got the feeling Warnock was too old school for today's type of football, what worked yester year doesn't work now

Fit is a relative concept. They are, of course fitter than you or..... Well maybe not me, but you get my point. They are compared with other elite football atheletes and that is where the bar is.
Huddersfield Town AFC and elite football athletes (or atheletes) is an oxymoron. We should be fit enough to play the way we want for 90 minutes.

I’m fitness mad , i train 3hrs a day , 6 days a week , cardio vascular and body building ( lucky enough to have a home Olympic gym ) , just thought if you were paid to be fit then you would be fit .

Its not that simple is it, you still need to pace yourself even as an elite athlete. If you are putting in more effort in the first half than the other team with high tempo pressing then its logical that you're gonna run out of steam quicker.

Imagine the best marathon runners in the world, if they sprint for the first mile they'll pay for it later on, I've seen boxers empty the tank early in a fight and pay for it towards the end.

No footballer in the world can run flat out for 90 minutes.

There is no ceiling to fitness, if you train for burst speed you will suffer long distance and train for long distances you lose burst. Build too much muscle and you can lose both.

If our players are being asked to play in a high tempo style they have not been training for then they will be unfit until they condition themselves accordingly.

Exactly this. An Olympic sprinter is, by anyone's standards, supremely fit, but ask them to run 10km and they would finish very likely last.

And to be honest I didn't see too much of a "fall off" today, we were a bit more back foot but we never really looked like conceding, we created a couple of good chances and the goal we did concede was "one of those" impossible to legislate for jobbies.

I don't think its comparable. I dunno how many miles does a footballer run in a game

How much of it is mental too? Players can easily waste energy thinking too much about the game, or being anxious during the game. There's a definite balance and ideally a player will not over think any situation and play what they see in front of them.

“ the goal we did concede was one of those impossible to legislate for jobbies.”
Apart from horrendous defending and positional play by Hernandez

A bit of a daft analogy......

Different types of fitness. The issue maybe they press or run when they don't have too etc. Also individual mistakes are a nothing to do with fitness. I mean we didn't lose on Tuesday because we weren't 'fit'.

I doubt a Warnock side is 'unfit'. It's also an easy slate for any new manager. To be fair Wilder has been pretty positive about what he's inherited.

Fitness is all relative. I mean a you'd think a champo or prem footballer is very fit? Yet they wouldn't pass a Para or Royal marine new entry because its a different 'fitness'. Stick an 18 year old final week para or marine against Salah and see who's 'fitter'.

I'm confident the young lad could do Salahs none football training yet Salah wouldn't last a day in P company.

Thats a daft example as well though, someone like Salah would have the physical potential to pass basic special forces training. Would he have the mental toughness? I don't know but the majority of professional athletes are mentally tough and they are absolute physical specimens.

I know lads who've been in the para's and marines and they are super fit but you are comparing them with the best footballers in the world. We are talking the absolute elite of professional sport. Maybe if Salah had to undertake special forces training tomorrow he might not pass but I'm sure a para couldn't play in Liverpools midfield either 😂

My point is that being 'fit' relative. Who's fit? A guy who trains 7 days a week or a Para / Footballer / 100m runner or marathon runner?

You can only train at what you want to do. I'd say a guy who can run a marathon at 26mile is 'fitter' than Bolt who runs 100m.

I can't believe any professional football champo team is 'unfit'. It's more mental and cutting out stupid mistakes.

Fit means "fit for purpose" surely?

If you intend playing a pressing game, you probably devote more of your training to physical conditioning at the expense of more technical aspects of the game.

Watched bolt on sky , something I had recorded months ago.(the Olympic sprinter not the Disney’s dog) It was suggested he did 400m but laughter it off as not for him ax training was to hard.

Can’t say he was unfit been the best in world for 12+ years over 200 &100m.

But that said to play professionally football u must be near your piers.

Can’t imagine powell or Gatland only training for 90m or 180m.

Get the point about style and fine margins but you have to be fit enough to combat these different styles.

Never managed to reach these levels but done a lot of sports / fitness over years, on or off and within a few month I can always get my self in to “top of class “
