How can we deal with the growing hate within the Uk

Today’s shocking events has highlighted once again how dangerously polarised this country is now becoming, whatever the reality of today’s attack turns out to be ( as it’s now believed that the attacker was a foreign national).

But one MP has revealed that in the last few years they have received over 700 death threats. That is just one mp a truly staggering number and it seems this polarising hate is just bubbling away. It’s clear social media has added to the issue and it’s clear that the anonymity of it has opened up this avenue to spread hate and anger.

you have to wonder where this will all end.

We have a culture which thinks sitting on the fence is a bad thing. Now if you have to make a decision on something this is a bad thing. But I think quite often we make decisions based on our prejudices formed through experience rather than any evidence we may have.

The rise of communication via internet has drastically changed the way we communicate with one another. The way I speak to people on here is often vastly different to how I speak to people in real life. I'm sure if I was talking face to face with someone 6 foot 4 and built like a brick ********* I'd moderate my language far more than I do online. Similarly I may have respect for someone's experience if I knew about it.

Then there's no non- verbal communication. Humour is taken in the wrong context.

We have communicated in real time face to face with one another for thousands upon thousands of years. This is a whole new way of communicating.

We tend to be very binary when engaging in faceless communication. I once participated in a thread where I had some experience of the subject. My contributions were labelled as being from the right side of the political spectrum, whereas I was just contributing my knowledge. This often happens. You don't have fives sixes or sevens in online debates. You get ones or tens. And you'll get shoved to one side or t'other no matter how neutral you may be on a subject.

Most people I speak to in real life have nuanced views. Post something balanced and reasonable on twitter and you won't get much reaction. Post something ridiculous and you will get lots.

Journalists then print these ridiculous views and suddenly they are news.

We are competitive beasts also. We aren't so removed from animals as we think we are. Your views become part of your self image. You must defend your self image against attacks. Go to any online community and you will see people falling into tribes. An attack on their opinion is an affront to their manhood. I've been embarrassed by how annoyed I have been about online arguments in the past.

Then we've had a pandemic. People have been isolated from human contact. This is a bad thing. Mental health should not just be measured in how many people have killed themselves.

There's a bump caused by technology. We will get used to it eventually. I certainly hope so anyway.

It feels to me as though you're not allowed to change your mind. Said something in 2011? Well buckle up pal, as that's what you're stuck with for the rest of your days.

We expect every famous teenager to have the mature, developed mindset of a forty plus adult and if you ever put your head above the parapet on social media you are expected to have the full body of reference that a prospective fellow at Oxford University would require in an interview.

One thing which rings true in real and online life is that having a big voice and an opinion is equated with being infallible. Question those types at the peril of your sanity.

Maybe get MPs to stop filling their own pockets, stop stoking the culture of division, stop punishing our most venerable, stop making cuts to vital services such as mental health and rehabilitation.

Whilst I have every sympathy for the MP who was killed today and his family.. so do I have sympathy to others who lose their lives every single day to similar crimes, sympathy for those are made to suffer unnecessarily.

One thing that genuinely surprises me on here is when people tell absolute strangers to grow up or even pipe down. Both were levied at me last week.

as others have said there is no way people would react or behave that way in person with others.

We are a collectively angry nation right now - especially England. Think I've mentioned it before but I was recently up in the Highlands and had several conversations with locals who told me that they'd never seen so many really angry English people on holiday before. I really don't know what the answer to our problem is, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't involve the media constantly running anti-foreigner stories on a daily basis and government setting policy to appease them.

The murder today of a public servant is a shocking, horrible event. Our country has so many problems right now, it's hard to know where to even start but MPs, regardless of political colour, must be protected from physical harm. I have a feeling it's going to be a long, hard winter.

Populist politics is to blame, especially the harder right and until this changes events such as this will continue to haunt us.
Populist politics? or politicians with their fingers in too many pies, noses in the trough, riding the gravy train, lining their pockets. This ‘far right’ ‘do as they please’ ‘proto fascist’ unionist party are passing them off to the public as ‘one nation conservatives’ millions of pounds aparantly going to the NHS.. you can’t pass off Pepsi for Coca Cola in a pub, how come fraudulent statements and false advertising are allowed to go ahead when it comes to politics?

Wasn’t that lady from Labour calling the pm scum the other week.

likewise I see another thread on here saying I wouldnt **** on a Tory if they were on fire.

but let’s blame the leader hey!
Good point Fatcat — when you even have elected officials spewing out hate-filled messages then perhaps we shouldn’t be too surprised on today’s events.

Hate filled messages? Hate filled
actions are the problem.
I think you're very much mistaken if you believe language and rhetoric plays no part in creating the very angry and hostile environment that we see.

Well said. It’s follow the leader time. We need to see high ranking politicians calm down the rhetoric, resist deliberate divisive behaviour. Create an environment where honest dialogue and measured arguments thrive.
And when it’s time to resign ……then RESIGN…..no one has an ounce of respect anymore because this government is terrible but take no responsibility and that filters through to the public but thick as thieves Tories don’t see it

I've said it before and I'll say it again, culture flows down from those with influence and power. from the PM, the media moguls and the internet influencers.

I actually think the start of a better world is to start to control the internet better. People are free to spread misinformation and hate with a free pass. It then influences everyone else. It's the single biggest source on hate
