How do Labour pick the country back up from its knees?

It’s a tall order, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t start. 12/13 years of this lot and even they’re saying we need a fresh start - I can’t believe they want us to think that fresh start should be with them.

They will need to set out a clear strategy for growth and improvement. They then need to be transparent and stick to it demonstrating improvements along the way.

It's going to take 20 yrs to repair the damage of 12 years of mismanagement.

And more important than ever, they need to drive corruption out of our political system and hold offenders to account.

By being bold, just like Attlee's post war Government and they had even bigger problems to sort out. Half measures won't cure the deep seated problems that seem entrenched in our country. A fair tax system and returning core services to public ownership, would be a start. According to every opinion poll, they are both extremely popular, even attracting significant support amongst Tory voters. Socialism popular, who'd have thought it?

The problem for me is policy and budgetary decsions are rigged by the city if they don't like them then they trash the market. The policy of shorting markets is detrimental to everyone in this country apart from the players in the city.
We really need to borrow big to get out of this mess but that's incredibly difficult when people in suits in the city don't agree.

Austerity over the last decade has just made everything worse and I believe that was a conscious decision by the Torys to cut services like the nhs to levels where they are so broken alternative privatised solutions seem workable. You cant cut services and improve the country as a whole. The domino effect of austerity from one public service to another has put millions in missery and poverty and will continue for years to come. We need to restore public services to previous levels and move away from an economic model of privatisation and unregulated free markets. We need to take back control of our utilities and public services. The short term gain in the 80s from Thatcherism has turned into a beast where only the strongest survive. Neoliberalism and unregulated capitalism has been proved to be a fraudulent economic grab by the wealthy. long term we need to move towards the economic models of Scandinavian countries with high taxation and high investment in public services like health, education and social care.

In my opinion we are witnessing the failure of capitalism and it will take a bit of time for people to get used to that after years of indoctrination.

An alternative will emerge but Labour need to concentrate on being seen to be redistributing wealth and making the lives of ordinary people better in as many ways as possible.

Spot on. We need systemic change, an alternative to capitalism, but so does the whole world, otherwise inequality will get worse and the earth will be destroyed. It's obvious because the poor and the earth itself are telling us so. But how do you go about changing something so embedded, with so many structures supporting it? Start with bringing essential resources into public control and put the planet first, and re-educate. Unfortunately, we are a long way from doing that due to politics and corporate power. The end.

I would imagine asking your civil servants for solutions on manifesto implementations might be the way to go.

Nationalising services that have been destroyed in the pursuit of shareholder dividends is a decent place to start. The suggestion that British Rail was worse than the current chaos has no long been debunked and there’s no reason the mistakes made during the decline of BR would be repeated. That’s just one service, energy and water should have been renationalised long ago.

BR was a beacon of efficiency and cost-effectiveness in the late 80s. That came from within the industry, too.

Massive programme of social housing,
reduce or abolish uni fees
ensure justice system works- prosecute the thieves that put us in this mess
nationalise utilities and strategic industries
invest in social care from babies to the elderly
take back the parts of the NHS that have been sold off

Not much actually needs to change. It's almost like a national mindset. For most people there aren't huge impacts from government decisions. Everyone is affected but not to the point of being at the extreme end of the spectrum. Sentiment and mood makes everything feel good/bad about the situation as a whole. All it needs is something to give people hope and optimism. As long as things seem to be trending upwards rather than downwards then people are satisfied.

The Tories are all about keeping a very small proportion of the country satisfied. The rest of us feel negative about their decisions so national sentiment is down. Labour will affect more people positively so it takes less for them to improve the outlook.

At the moment every piece of news looks terrible. Prices are going up, inflation is going up, heating is too expensive etc. If that starts to reverse everyone will be a bit relieved even if we never get back to where we were. It's constantly re-basing.

Unfortunately all control and decision making now is at the behest of the city since deregulation of the financial markets. Radical solutions proposed by labour to re-adjust the wealth divide in the UK will just be trashed by the markets. Real power has been devolved from government into the hands of hedge fund scumbags like rishi mates, they are now judge and jury to all economic policies.

That’s what they want you to think, that’s it’s not worth bothering with and we’re all knackered whichever way we slice it. The truth is we have to re nationalise some services because they’re already failing so leaving them as they are further trashes and already crumbling part of the economy. The government brought the east coast mainline back to Profitability showing it doesn’t take very long once shareholder interests are not the main priority. The state still owns a major stake in Nat West, another example of the private sector needing the public sector more than the other way around.

They are not going to do anything radical. Nothing. A few tweaks here and there and introduction of big policies to huge fanfare .....which can't/won't be implemented.

Starmer is going right down the Blair route, cosying up to The S*n and the financial institutions. Doing whatever to get elected. He's still going to be controlled by the financial institutions and media moguls.

And then what? For those dreaming of the reset button being pressed and a solid socialist government taking the UK forward out of the Tory made abyss - forget it.

Will things be slightly better than the the current cabal? Yes. Will the majority of the population be better off, able to buy food, turn the heating on without worrying - no.

Going to be no sunny uplands anytime soon.

I hope your right we need governments to take a stake in uk infrastructure and public sector services such as new renewable projects. Its been my biggest bug bear that we have sold or privatised everything of worth for a quick buck in this country to private investors many of which are foreign owned.

Firstly emergency measures to stop those on the very brink from going over the edge, longer term a review of taxation and how we can best co-exist as a social democratic society within the framework of a predominately Capitalist world.

We need Keynesian investment in infrastructure and move towards a more self sufficient plan that negates the worst of global variance with regards to energy, food, manufacture etc, whilst not a Brexit supporter I think that kind of policy would appease those who are and would allow for us to have closer links with the EU whilst offering support and assistance to businesses within the UK.

Nationally owned alternatives on many businesses, insurance, transport, energy, water, etc, people can then chose to support those state ran companies who long term will invest in the country or can support private enterprise if they believe in trickledown benefits.

A review of the NHS and ways of improving service and efficiency, same with defence, policing, education etc for example the Police and Crime Commissioner is on £83k a year plus expenses but appears to add nothing that warrants that outlay to the taxpayer, surely there should be a local board of councillors, MP's etc who have a responsibility for policing in the same way we have planning committees, this would also reflect the need to look at local government funding and how that can be more autonomous and less reliant on the whim of central funding.

There is a lot to underdo but by building the foundations, setting in place a culture of more social responsibility and demonstrating that despite what we have been told these policies won't just work for some but raise the standards for all is a great start in resetting the direction of governance that has become increasingly venal, self serving and failing in purpose.

We need less Party Politics and more cooperation across the board.
