How good was Glenn Hoddle really?

I never saw him play, I only know him as a manager and pundit but loads of ex‑pros from the 90s and 00s say he was their hero. Roy Keane even said Hoddle was the player he looked up to.

People say he was so skilful in the 80s that England didn’t know how to use him and nobody could get the ball off him.

How good was he actually, and did he ever play against Boro?

Would he be one of the best players in the world now?

Why wasn't he then then? Did he suffer from the Heysel ban ie would have joined a bigger English club if they'd still played in the EC, rather than Monaco? Waddle managed to become more of a global star I'd say, despite doing similar.

That said, neither featured in the top 30 of the ballon d'Or throughout the 80s.

saw him play for Swindon against Cambridge when he had dropped back to central defender at the back end of his career. He was awesome that day and a true stand out

Well, Platini knew a thing or two about skilful attacking midfield play and he said if Hoddle had been french he'd have won 100 caps and they'd have built the team around him. Think on that. Michel Platini thought that.

I know, but he was never viewed at the time as one of the best players in the world, or he'd have got ballon d'Or votes surely?

Famously, during a training session, he critiqued David Beckham's ability to pull off a free-kick routine that Hoddle himself easily demonstrated, creating resentment within the squad.

He did a lot of stuff like that I’ve heard. Heavily involved in training playing games and stuff.. a few players have said it was like he wanted to be playing.
 
Pretty sure he was my first favourite player, early 80s.
And don’t know how true but it felt like waddles peak was later on circa late 80/90s.

I do remember hoddle had a serious knee injury, but looking at his honours on wiki and he was frequently in team of the year.

Some of the choices for England manager have been woeful too.

Robson, Venebles & Southgate have been the top boys.. the rest.. not so much
 
Decent player but not world class, had a good successful career as a player scored a lot of goals and made a lot of career appearances and was reasonably successful as a boss. Unfortunately he became a bit loopy with his ideals really, which happens to a lot of people.
